The driver of the other vehicle involved stayed at the scene, and officers closed one lane of eastbound Leesburg Pike at Rio Drive as investigators worked the crash.
According to DC News Now, details remain limited as detectives continue working to determine what led up to the crash. The outlet reported that the incident marks the second crash in the past 24 hours in Fairfax County to leave a motorcyclist seriously injured.
The other crash happened a day earlier on Mount Vernon Highway, where a motorcyclist was also hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and the driver of the other vehicle likewise remained on scene to cooperate with police, as Hoodline previously reported. In both cases, medics rushed the injured rider to the hospital while the other driver stayed put.
A Corridor With a History of Safety Concerns
The crash site sits along a stretch of Route 7 that has drawn scrutiny before. The Virginia Department of Transportation lowered the posted speed limit on Leesburg Pike through Seven Corners and Bailey's Crossroads from 40 mph to 35 mph in April 2023, following a formal traffic study prompted by community safety concerns, according to Annandale Today. Local advocacy groups had requested the study after multiple pedestrian deaths and a high volume of crashes along the corridor.
