A 47-year-old Alexandria man was convicted this week of attempting to rape a 51-year-old housekeeper who was cleaning an empty room at a Quality Inn in Mount Vernon last October, and prosecutors say a letter he tried to send from jail nearly derailed his own defense. Oscar Barrios was found guilty following a two-day bench trial in Fairfax County Circuit Court, with a judge determining he attacked the woman as she worked alone in the hotel room.
According to DC News Now, Barrios locked the room door behind him on October 4, 2025, then threw the victim face down onto the bed. He struck her in the head with a green beer bottle he had purchased at a nearby 7-Eleven, grabbed her from behind, and tried to pull down her pants from the waistband while telling her to “relax and enjoy it,” the outlet reported. He also knocked the phone out of her hand as she tried to call for help before she managed to run out of the room.
Investigators with the Major Crimes Bureau identified Barrios after reviewing hotel surveillance footage that showed him coming and going from the property, then located him at a nearby store in Groveton, as reported by FOX 5 DC. An eyewitness identified him, and he was arrested two days after the attack.
Initial Charges and Conviction
Barrios initially faced five charges out of the Groveton incident — attempted rape, abduction with intent to defile, statutory burglary, simple assault, and petit larceny — according to FFXnow. A General District Court judge ordered him held without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and set a preliminary hearing for December 29, 2025, the outlet reported. He was later convicted of attempted rape following the bench trial.
Barrios faces up to 10 years in prison at his sentencing, scheduled for December 4.
Jailhouse Letter Intercepted by Deputies
While Barrios awaited trial, a sheriff's deputy at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center intercepted a letter he had written to a friend, according to the DC News Now report. The letter reportedly laid out a possible plan to find the victim at her job and pressure her not to testify, and it included a possible offer of money to keep her from coming to court. The letter also contained an excuse for the attack but did not deny that it happened, the outlet reported.
Personal mail sent to inmates at the detention center is processed through an off-site digital vendor in Florida to curb contraband, according to the Fairfax County Sheriff's Office. Separately, a sheriff's deputy intercepted Barrios's letter, according to the DC News Now report.
Prosecutor Points to Broader Safety Message
Fairfax County Commonwealth's Attorney Steve Descano, who announced the conviction, said his office will prosecute anyone who threatens the public's sense of safety, adding that people shouldn't be afraid to go to work or do other daily activities in Fairfax County. Descano has faced high-profile public and congressional scrutiny throughout 2026 over his office's prosecution strategies and plea-bargaining policies in violent crime cases, according to the Washington Post.
Victim specialists were working with the 51-year-old housekeeper. The case also draws attention to reported rapes in the county. Statewide, Virginia State Police documented 5,310 forcible sex offenses affecting 5,226 victims across the Commonwealth in 2024, according to the agency's Crime in Virginia report.
Barrios faces sentencing on December 4.
