Now the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office wants the public's help putting a name to the face caught on the shop's surveillance footage.
The theft happened at a restaurant along the historic Edgewood Avenue South corridor, according to a Jax Sheriff's Office post billed as this week's “Wanted Wednesday” appeal. JSO says the suspect — dubbed the “mobile menace” in the agency's post — spotted the phone sitting unattended on the counter, snatched it, and ran from the restaurant. The case is logged under CCR#2026-518686.
Edgewood Avenue South is the commercial backbone of Murray Hill, a dense, walkable strip of local restaurants and small shops that has served the neighborhood since its streetcar days, according to Visit Jacksonville. Murray Hill was originally platted in the late 19th century, incorporated as its own town in 1916, and annexed by Jacksonville in 1925, with Edgewood Avenue developing into its main commercial corridor, per The Jaxson. That kind of high foot-traffic, counter-service environment is exactly the setup that makes an unattended phone an easy target for opportunistic theft.
What the Suspect Could Face
Whether this ends up as a misdemeanor or a felony hinges entirely on what the phone was worth at the moment it disappeared. Under Florida Statute § 812.014, stolen property valued under $750 is charged as misdemeanor petit theft, punishable by up to a year in jail, while anything valued at $750 or more becomes third-degree felony grand theft, carrying up to five years in prison — a threshold the Florida Senate raised from $300 in 2019.
That valuation isn't as simple as looking up the phone's original price tag. Florida appellate precedent requires prosecutors to establish a depreciating item's actual market value at the time of the theft, not what it cost new, meaning testimony or receipts on the phone's age and condition would likely be needed to prove a felony charge, according to the Brancato Law Firm. Tipsters who want to stay anonymous can instead route information through First Coast Crime Stoppers, which offers rewards of up to $3,000 for standard tips and up to $5,000 for select major felony cases across Duval, Clay, Nassau, Baker, Bradford, and Union counties. Between July 2025 and June 2026 alone, the organization processed 3,035 anonymous tips regionwide, leading to 213 arrests, 615 cleared cases, and $124,900 in approved cash rewards — numbers that illustrate just how often anonymous leads actually pay off.
JSO's digital-first approach has produced real results elsewhere too. Since its Unsolved Crimes portal launched in June 2023, the site generated over 700 public tips that helped identify more than 600 suspects by June 2026, prompting the department to roll out dedicated Wanted and Missing Persons web pages in March 2026. The Murray Hill phone theft joins a growing list of weekly Wanted Wednesday appeals Hoodline has tracked in recent weeks, including a $5,700 Apple theft case and a distraction theft along Atlantic Boulevard. As of now, JSO has not released a description of the suspect beyond the surveillance footage tied to CCR#2026-518686.
