A two-story home on the 3900 block of Wistman Lane in Myersville went up in flames early Wednesday, forcing all five occupants to escape before firefighters arrived and leaving the structure a total loss. Roughly 60 firefighters battled the blaze, and the Red Cross is now assisting the two adults and three children who were displaced.
The fire was reported as a Box Alarm 8-11 at 12:35 a.m., sending Myersville Volunteer Fire Company's Engine 82 racing to the scene, according to The Frederick Watch. Crews arrived just eight minutes later, at 12:43 a.m., to find the two-story house fully engulfed. As DC News Now reports, all occupants had already made it out safely by the time fire crews pulled up.
Rural Location Forced a Water Shuttle Response
Because the home sits in a secluded stretch of Frederick County without municipal fire hydrants nearby, Battalion Chief 903 requested a Tanker Task Force while still en route at 12:41 a.m. That call brought in specialized water-hauling units — including EK114, WCEK16, WCEK7 and WCK6 — to set up a shuttle operation, the outlet's report notes. The workaround reflects a broader challenge across Frederick County, which at 664 square miles is Maryland's largest county by land area and leans on roughly 600 volunteers alongside 546 career personnel spread across 25 fire corporations, according to Firehouse Magazine.
Once on scene, crews performed a 360-degree assessment at 12:45 a.m. to secure propane tanks outside the home before the fire's spread pushed them into defensive tactics, per 930 WFMD. Portions of the home's rear and side collapsed as firefighters worked, and the blaze was brought under control by 1:11 a.m. Emergency medical crews evaluated two adult residents at the scene, though the same report notes neither required transport to a hospital.
Cause Still Under Investigation
Fire officials say the cause of the fire remains under investigation, DC News Now reports, and the Maryland State Fire Marshal is now examining the origin of the blaze that left the structure a total loss.
