An unknown driver rammed through a fence into Groveport Cemetery sometime Saturday night, damaging two headstones and leaving behind broken pieces of their vehicle before disappearing. Groveport police are now asking residents near the cemetery to dig through their home security footage for any sign of a damaged car or unusual driving that night.

According to abc6onyourside.com, the vehicle first went through a fence near the cemetery entrance on the night of Saturday, September 19. Tire tracks at the scene showed the car then drove toward the back of the cemetery before circling back toward the front, where it struck another section of fence and two headstones. Investigators collected pieces of the vehicle that broke off during the crash and called nearby towing companies as part of their search, as reported by myfox28columbus.com.

Cleanup Underway, But Damage Lingers

Groveport's public works department was already on site Monday, September 21, cleaning up debris and repositioning the two damaged gravestones. Crews still have more work ahead, though — the same account notes there is a little bit of work left to buff dirt and marks off the stones before the site looks fully restored.

Shawn Cleary, the councilmember who oversees Groveport Cemetery, said the outcome could have been much worse than it was. He also said he hopes the driver, or anyone with information about what happened, will come forward and contact Groveport police, adding that people should be held responsible for the damage they cause.

A Family With Ties to the Cemetery

The damaged headstones belong to the Crank family, who are described as well known around Groveport. The Crank children are aware of the damage to their family's headstones, according to the same report.

Police are asking anyone near the cemetery to check their home security camera footage from Saturday night into Sunday, looking specifically for cars showing damage or any unusual driving activity in the area. Anyone who finds relevant footage or has information is asked to call Groveport police.
