An 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were both hospitalized in stable condition, and investigators say the shooter or shooters unleashed nearly 20 rounds before fleeing the scene.
According to NBC10 Philadelphia, police spokesperson Scott Small said investigators recovered at least 17 spent shell casings at the scene. One of the surviving victims believed the shooting was a drive-by, per Small, though police have not confirmed how the attack unfolded and have not released details on suspects or a possible motive. The investigation remains ongoing.
A Familiar Pattern in a Busy Police District
The stretch of Lambert Street where the shooting happened sits in North Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Police Department's 22nd Police District, headquartered at 1747 W. Montgomery Avenue, has historically ranked among the city's busiest for violent crime emergency calls, according to the Philadelphia Police Department. The district covers a dense residential swath of North Philadelphia bounded generally by Poplar Street and Lehigh Avenue, an area that has seen a reported nonfatal shooting on North 18th Street in recent weeks.
Once shell casings are collected, they become evidence, though that does not guarantee an arrest. The investigation remains ongoing.
The Age of the Victims Fits a Troubling Trend
The involvement of a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old in Tuesday's shooting reflects a broader pattern researchers have documented in Philadelphia. Both teens wounded on Lambert Street were taken to a hospital for treatment of torso gunshot wounds. Temple University Hospital's Level 1 Trauma Center at 3509 North Broad Street maintains dedicated 24-hour surgical critical care teams for firearm trauma, per Temple Health.
A Neighborhood in the Middle of Change
The shooting scene sits just blocks from the planned $40 million North Central Public Safety complex at 21st and Diamond Streets. As WHYY reported, a groundbreaking ceremony was expected in July, and the project will eventually house a modernized 22nd District police station alongside a Police Athletic League youth center expected to open in 2027, replacing vacant lots.
The shooting investigation is focused on identifying the shooter rather than assessing police accountability.
