A brand-new CVS Pharmacy is set to open its doors in Bridgeville this weekend, taking over a building spanning more than 14,000 square feet that once housed a Rite Aid at 417 Chartiers Street. The store will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 26, followed by a community block party running until 1 p.m. with a complimentary food truck, a live DJ, interactive games, giveaways and family activities.
The opening was reported by WPXI, which detailed the store's updated layout, décor and fixtures, along with an expanded pharmacy featuring a private vaccination area and a refreshed in-store delivery pickup zone. The new location will also include a drive-thru and is expected to employ roughly 15 people. Store manager Ralph Haley told the station the new CVS will offer wellness products, beauty items and household goods, calling it a health and wellness hub for the community.
The Bridgeville store's arrival is part of a much larger reshuffling of the pharmacy industry that followed Rite Aid's second Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in May 2025, amid mounting debt and financial problems, according to KSL.com. Court-approved sales sent Rite Aid's pharmacy assets to CVS, Walgreens, Giant Eagle, Kroger and Albertsons, unwinding a 60-year-old chain that had operated around 1,200 stores. That same month, Rite Aid put 1,194 store leases and 50 owned properties up for bid nationwide, according to CoStar.
CVS Absorbs Prescriptions Across Pennsylvania
The Bridgeville reopening followed a broader statewide move by CVS to absorb Rite Aid's pharmacy customers. In October 2025, CVS completed an agreement to acquire prescription records from 626 former Rite Aid locations across 15 states, including 170 stores in Pennsylvania, transferring more than 9 million patient accounts into its system, per Patch. CVS Health also reported hiring more than 3,500 former Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs employees nationwide to help manage the influx of new patients and pharmacy operations.
Not every Rite Aid customer in the region ended up with CVS. Giant Eagle also picked up select Rite Aid prescription files in Pennsylvania during the bankruptcy proceedings, and Bridgeville-area residents already have Giant Eagle Pharmacy locations at 1025 Washington Pike and 3239 Washington Pike; CVS also has a location in the area.
Growth Amid a Wave of Closures
The new storefront opens even as CVS Health continues trimming its national footprint. The company planned to close 271 retail stores in 2025 alone, on top of roughly 900 closures carried out between 2022 and 2024, according to Newsweek. Even so, CVS has noted that about 85% of the U.S. population still lives within 10 miles of one of its stores.
Industry analysts point to flatlining reimbursement rates from pharmacy benefit managers, rising competition, including from Amazon, and opioid-related lawsuit payouts as key pressures that pushed chains like Rite Aid into bankruptcy, according to Healthcare Dive. Rite Aid had generated more than $24 billion in annual revenue in 2023 before debt and legal liabilities caught up with it. CVS Health, by contrast, reported FY2025 revenue exceeding $400 billion.
What Bridgeville Gets Back
Bridgeville is a borough with a population of 4,804 recorded in the 2020 U.S. Census, and sits roughly 10 miles southwest of downtown Pittsburgh. The new CVS will bring a drive-thru pharmacy to the former Rite Aid site on Chartiers Street.
Once open, the store will run daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. for general retail, with pharmacy hours of 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. To mark the opening, CVS is offering 30% off all full-priced CVS brand products, a promotion that runs through October 3.
