A new café has opened its doors at The Pearl, Charlotte's midtown innovation district, giving workers, students and neighbors a fresh spot for breakfast, lunch, desserts and grab-and-go bites. The Study Food Social occupies 2,911 square feet on the ground floor of a building that also houses Charlotte's first four-year medical school, and it's open to the public, not just those who work or study inside the complex.
The café sits at 915 Pearl Park Way, on the ground floor of the Howard R. Levine Center for Education, according to Axios. Inside, there's seating for 40 people, with additional seating available on an outdoor patio for anyone who prefers to eat outside. The Pearl itself is described as a midtown development in Charlotte, and the same report notes it houses the city's first four-year medical school.
What's on the Menu
Breakfast runs from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday, with a menu that includes omelettes, buttermilk pancakes, freshly baked pastries and a fruit-and-yogurt bar. Lunch follows from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, featuring house-made soups, a salad bar, burgers, sandwiches, bowls and rotating chef-inspired dishes. For anyone on a tighter schedule, grab-and-go options are available from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Ordering is designed to be flexible: customers can place orders through café kiosks on site, or pre-order and pay ahead of time through Toast online. Behind the scenes, Restaurant Associates provides The Pearl's food-and-beverage service and is part of Charlotte-based Compass Group, the same report states.
Coffee With a Mission
The Study's coffee comes from Change Please, described as a nonprofit with a local roasting facility in Charlotte. Change Please's broader model links coffee sales with employment, giving on-the-job training to unhoused individuals, according to Queen City Nerve, which reported that the program pays trainees double the minimum wage as they build barista skills.
That mission dovetails with The Pearl's broader ambitions. Per The Pearl's own materials, the district is billed as Charlotte's first innovation district and is meant to support a growing ecosystem of restaurants, retail and service companies. Developer Wexford Science & Technology describes The Pearl as a multi-phased, mixed-use project featuring office and lab space alongside ground-level retail and food-and-beverage activation.
Anchored by a Medical School
The café's location is no accident. Wexford Science & Technology notes that the first phase of The Pearl includes Charlotte's first four-year medical school, and the Howard R. Levine Center for Education specifically is described as home to that same medical school. That puts The Study Food Social at the literal ground floor of one of the city's most closely watched new academic and research hubs.
Photographs of the new café were provided by Advocate Health. Whether more dining options will follow as The Pearl's build-out continues remains to be seen, but for now, The Study Food Social gives the district its newest place to grab a pancake, a sandwich or a cup of coffee with a social conscience behind it.
