A New Smyrna Beach couple is facing felony charges after police say they found an 8-year-old dog named Gemma so emaciated that her ribs, spine and hip bones were visible, along with open sores and chronic skin problems. Shaun Haedrich, 47, and Cathrine Haedrich, 56, were arrested on felony aggravated animal cruelty charges, according to officials.
The case began when the New Smyrna Beach Police Department's animal control unit responded to a residence in the 2800 block of Brookline Avenue, according to FOX 35 Orlando. Police say they were investigating a report of a dog in poor condition when Gemma was found during a welfare check.
Officials say Gemma was severely emaciated and showed significant muscle loss, open sores and chronic skin problems in addition to the visible ribs, spine and hip bones. A concerned citizen had provided photographs showing the dog with visible ribs and hip bones, severe hair loss and other signs of neglect, per the same account.
Dog Seized for Veterinary Evaluation
Gemma was seized for her safety and transported for forensic documentation and a veterinary evaluation, the report notes. Investigators determined that Gemma had been neglected over an extended period and was not receiving needed veterinary care.
Police said they will file a petition for custody through the court system, a step officials say will ensure Gemma receives continued care and protection. Custody of Gemma remained unclear at the time of the report.
Felony Charges Under Florida Law
Shaun Haedrich and Cathrine Haedrich were both charged with felony aggravated animal cruelty. Under the Florida Senate statute, aggravated animal cruelty is addressed in section 828.12.
