The fourth annual Newark Summit for Economic Development, Placemaking & Innovation is set to return on December 8, drawing more than 1,250 regional business, government, and nonprofit leaders to downtown Newark for a day of panels on growth, culture, and investment. Mayor Ras J. Baraka is confirmed to headline the event with a fireside chat, joined by a lineup of speakers spanning real estate, arts institutions, healthcare, and finance.
According to ROI-NJ, the summit will be held on the 16th and 17th floors of 550 Broad Street, the same 18-story downtown office tower where the Newark Alliance and Prudential Financial are co-chairing the event and Invest Newark is serving as presenting partner. The Fidelco Group is the summit's venue partner. The 294,000-square-foot building underwent lobby and amenity renovations in 2000 and 2016. The structure was built in 1966 by Mutual Benefit Life before its later conversion into a multi-tenant business hub.
Evan Weiss, president and CEO of the Newark Alliance, said the summit convenes people to discuss the programs, initiatives, developments, and opportunities shaping Newark's continued rise, per the same ROI-NJ report. Marcus Randolph, president and CEO of Invest Newark, said Newark continues to be a hub of growth and opportunity, with businesses and retailers driving the city's momentum. Lata Reddy, senior vice president of inclusive solutions at Prudential Financial and chair of the Prudential Foundation, said Prudential is committed to strengthening Newark's vibrancy and resilience.
A Host Venue Tied to Downtown's Innovation Push
Kerri B. Levine, principal of the Fidelco Group, said 550 Broad and Fidelco are proud to host the Newark Summit, the report notes. The venue's role as an economic anchor predates this year's event: Audible's business-attraction efforts brought four technology startups to leased office space at 550 Broad Street, establishing an innovation hub in downtown Newark, according to Audible. Harlem restaurateur Melba Wilson, founder and chef of Melba's Restaurant and a confirmed summit speaker, partnered with Fidelco Realty Group to bring Melba's 550, a ground-floor street-access restaurant, to the building, as reported by New Jersey Stage. The restaurant was envisioned as a significant addition to the neighborhood.
That square, near 550 Broad Street, is itself a marker of Newark's recent placemaking efforts.
Speakers Represent Newark's Cultural and Civic Anchors
Beyond Baraka, Reddy, Weiss, and Levine, confirmed speakers include Bernel Hall, president and CEO of New Jersey Community Capital; Carole Johnson, CEO and president of University Hospital in Newark; and Leonard Spicer, executive director of the Newark Housing Authority. Also slated to appear are Melanie Walter, executive director of NJHMFA; John Schreiber, president and CEO of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center; and Jon Crowley, executive director of the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission.
Rounding out the roster are Lisa Funderburke, director and CEO of Newark Museum of Art; Talia Young, president and CEO of Newark Symphony Hall; Ron Beit, CEO of RBH Group; and Brian Murray, CEO of Shift Capital. Several of these leaders are currently steering major capital projects of their own. NJPAC broke ground in September 2024 on a three-year, $336 million, 12-acre campus expansion that includes ArtSide, a tower with 350 residential units and a new home for WBGO, according to Jersey Digs. The project also creates the new four-season Essex County Green public park at Chambers Plaza.
The Newark City Council separately approved plans in 2024 for the Newark Museum of Art's Museum Parc project, a downtown development adding 250 apartments, retail space, 4,000 square feet of gallery expansion, and a redesigned sculpture garden, per the City of Newark. Newark Symphony Hall, led by Young, is meanwhile undergoing a multi-phase $75 million historic renovation to restore the 1925 performing arts venue, which stands as New Jersey's largest Black-led arts facility, the city says.
Growth, Housing, and Retail on the Agenda
Organizers say the summit will bring together investors, anchor institutions, developers, occupiers, owners, nonprofits, and advisors to discuss growth, innovation, and placemaking in Newark. Scheduled topics include arts and culture, mixed-use development, innovative retail, placemaking, office growth, capital, talent, affordable housing, and emerging markets, alongside sessions on capital markets, finance, tax incentives, nonprofit leadership, philanthropy, public-private partnerships, and multifamily development, according to ROI-NJ. A separate fireside chat with Mayor Baraka is also on the schedule.
