A tip about a family living beneath Interstate 5 north of Woodland led Yolo County sheriff's deputies to a makeshift tent camp where they found a seven-day-old newborn amid trash, rotten food and suspected drug paraphernalia. The baby's parents, 48-year-old Fernando Esparza and 29-year-old Melissa Rivera, were arrested on suspicion of child endangerment and booked into Yolo County Jail.
Deputies Find Infant Living Amid Trash and Suspected Meth Pipes
Deputies were dispatched to an area near County Road 19A north of Woodland after receiving the tip about the family, according to CBS News. Once there, they found Esparza and Rivera inside a makeshift tent with their newborn. Per detectives, accumulated trash, rotten food, unsanitary sleeping conditions and suspected methamphetamine pipes were found inside and around the tent.
Child welfare services was called to the scene once the conditions were discovered. The newborn was evaluated by paramedics on-site before being taken to Woodland Memorial Hospital for further care. The infant was later transferred to a neonatal intensive care unit in Sacramento County, though officials have not released additional information about the baby's medical condition.

In a far more tragic case, a Lodi woman faced murder charges in 2022 after giving birth in an encampment and her baby was later found dead, per KCRA. Earlier this year, a 31-year-old woman was charged with murder in the death of her newborn in a Ventura County homeless encampment, according to KTLA.
In the Yolo County case, the baby was hospitalized, a distinction that separates it from some of those other encampment cases. Still, the discovery beneath I-5 has left unanswered questions about the infant's current placement and health status, details officials have not made public.
