A youth football game at Calvert Hall College High School turned into an emergency medevac scene Thursday evening, September 10, after a North East High School player was hurt during a freshman/sophomore matchup and flown to a Baltimore trauma center. By the next day, school officials confirmed the teen had been diagnosed with a concussion, treated, and released to go home with his family.
Baltimore County Fire Department crews responded at around 5:40 p.m. Thursday to the football field at Calvert Hall, located in the 8100 block of La Salle Road in Towson, after reports of an injured player during the game against North East High School, according to WBAL-TV. Baltimore County police officers were also called to the scene, according to WBFF, while The Baltimore Banner first broke the news.
On-scene emergency responders directed that the player be airlifted to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, WBAL-TV reported. The Maryland State Police performed the transport, according to WBFF's initial report. At the time, the extent of the teen's injuries was unknown.
Correcting the Player's School
Early reports, including WBFF's initial coverage, identified the injured athlete as attending Northeast High School in Anne Arundel County. School officials and a subsequent report clarified that the student-athlete actually attends North East High School in Cecil County, as reported by CBS Baltimore.
A Cecil County Public Schools statement relayed by the outlet said emergency medical services recommended the helicopter transport to a regional medical center for specialized evaluation “out of an abundance of caution.” The same statement confirmed that after a comprehensive medical evaluation at the hospital, the student-athlete was diagnosed with a concussion, treated, and released to return home with his family.
Calvert Hall Offers Support
Calvert Hall Director of Communications and Marketing Danielle Hladky said in a release that the host school community offered prayers and support for the injured athlete, his family, and the visiting North East High community, the station's report noted.
