The grocery store at 3813 North Monroe St. in Tallahassee has a new name on the marquee. Fresh 4 Less, the budget grocer that has served the Lake Jackson area since 2018, is now operating as Piggly Wiggly Food for Less, according to the local grocery store's Facebook post announcing the conversion earlier this month.
The rebrand folds the North Monroe location into a fast-growing regional chain owned by Sneads-based McDaniel Family Investments, Inc., as reported by the Tallahassee Democrat. The store had operated as an affiliate of Piggly Wiggly under the Fresh 4 Less banner, but it now carries the Piggly Wiggly name outright, joining a network that spans 14 supermarket locations across North Florida, central and south Georgia, and the Montgomery, Alabama market as of August 2026, according to McDaniel Family Investments. The company traces its roots back to 1989, when William Ralph McDaniel bought a local IGA grocery store before shifting to the Piggly Wiggly brand in the early 1990s; it's now run by brothers Kevin and Cody McDaniel.
What Stays the Same for Shoppers
Despite the new sign, the store's pricing structure isn't changing. Store management said the cost-plus model has created significant savings for customers without compromising quality, per the Tallahassee Democrat's reporting. Under that setup, goods are sold at cost plus 10 percent to cover operational expenses and overhead — a pricing quirk that can catch shoppers used to conventional retail tags off guard, though it's designed to pass savings straight through to buyers.
The North Monroe store occupies 50,000 square feet and sells produce, meats, seafood and shelf items, preparing fruits and vegetables fresh daily and offering a wash-and-cut service on produce. It's now the second Piggly Wiggly Food for Less location in Tallahassee, joining a store at 2526 S. Monroe St. on the city's southside. The North Monroe location is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays.
A Truckload Meat Blowout and a Broader Push on Protein Prices
The rebrand landed just days after the store hosted a truckload meat blowout on September 17, featuring ground beef, Certified Angus prime top sirloin and pork, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. That sale fits into a larger regional push: in August 2026, Piggly Wiggly Food for Less rolled out an Affordable Protein Initiative across all 14 of its locations, offering discounted pricing on fresh beef, pork and poultry that was developed through direct negotiations with meat manufacturers, according to Grocery Dive.
The company isn't slowing its expansion, either. Piggly Wiggly Food for Less has plans for six locations across Alabama, Georgia and Florida, including sites in Havana, Wetumpka, Montgomery, Sandersville and Eastman, per the Tallahassee Democrat. The chain already operates a Piggly Wiggly Food for Less store in Sneads, while Havana is among its planned locations across the surrounding Big Bend and Panhandle region, and it opened a location in Gadsden County in December.
Filling a Gap Left by Winn-Dixie
The North Monroe site has carried outsized importance for the Lake Jackson neighborhood since it first opened as Fresh 4 Less on September 8, 2018. At the time, the store employed more than 100 people and featured amenities like an on-site produce butcher and a hot food bar, according to the Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce. Its opening restored grocery access for residents who had faced a retail void after Winn-Dixie reduced its brick-and-mortar presence across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina that same year, closing 94 stores in the process.
The Piggly Wiggly name itself carries more than a century of grocery history. Clarence Saunders founded the chain in Memphis, Tennessee, on September 6, 1916, creating America's first self-service grocery store and introducing innovations such as shopping baskets and open shelves, according to Piggly Wiggly LLC. Today the brand name and licensing rights belong to Keene, New Hampshire-based C&S Wholesale Grocers, LLC, while more than 500 Piggly Wiggly stores serve communities in 18 states. C&S is itself one of the largest privately held wholesale distributors in the country, servicing more than 7,500 independent supermarkets and chain locations nationwide, according to C&S Wholesale Grocers.
For now, the North Monroe Street store is offering fresh local produce, everyday essentials and discounted groceries to the same Lake Jackson community it has served since 2018 — just with new signage above the door.
