A 31-year-old North Ridgeville man died Wednesday afternoon after his SUV veered off the Ohio Turnpike, struck a guardrail and a bridge column, then rotated back into traffic and collided with a second vehicle in Olmsted Township. Justin Barker was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver of the other car was not injured.
According to Cleveland 19 News, Barker was driving eastbound on the turnpike around 4 p.m. when his Cadillac drove off the right side of the road, struck a guardrail and a bridge column, then rotated back and struck another vehicle. Reporting by WKYC specifies that Barker was behind the wheel of a 2009 Cadillac Escalade, which rebounded off the bridge structure into the path of a 2019 Toyota Corolla. State troopers say the crash remains under investigation.
Second Driver Identified, Unhurt
An Ohio State Highway Patrol news release identified the driver of the second vehicle as 37-year-old Courtney Telep of Berea, Ohio, who was uninjured in the collision, according to StayTunedSandusky. The same release confirmed that the fatal crash investigation is being led specifically by the Milan Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, which handles state patrol operations along key northern Ohio stretches of the turnpike.
Emergency responders at the scene included the Olmsted Township Fire Department, the Cuyahoga County Coroner's Office, the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission, and Rich's Towing, the WKYC report notes. The right eastbound lane remained closed for approximately three hours during the initial investigation, matching the roughly three-hour closure figure reported by Cleveland 19 News.
A Corridor With a History of Turnpike Incidents
Wednesday's crash happened not far from the turnpike commission's own administrative headquarters, which sits in neighboring Berea, directly adjacent to Olmsted Township. That Berea facility houses the commission's central dispatch and incident management support for the toll road.
The stretch of the Ohio Turnpike running through Cuyahoga and Lorain counties has seen repeated high-profile incidents. In June, Hoodline reported that a rollover crash near Elyria killed a Lorain woman and shut down eastbound lanes for three hours after the driver drifted off the right shoulder and struck a guardrail. And in January, a semi-truck brake fire carrying hazardous calcium hypochlorite forced an hours-long closure of the turnpike near Berea and Olmsted Township, drawing a primary hazmat response from the same Olmsted Township Fire Department that responded to Wednesday's fatal crash.
Statewide Crash Numbers and Speed Limits
Provisional statewide statistics from the Ohio State Highway Patrol show troopers investigated 34,353 total motor vehicle crashes across the state between January 1 and September 7, a figure slightly lower than the 35,641 crashes recorded over the same period in 2025. The Ohio Turnpike Commission has posted a maximum speed limit of 70 mph across most of the 241-mile toll highway since a regulatory change took effect in April 2011, when the limit was raised from 65 mph following a commission vote.
Locally, transportation planners have flagged persistent safety concerns near the crash site. A December 2025 Cuyahoga County public works filing, citing analysis from the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency, identified State Route 252 near the turnpike in Olmsted Falls as the highest-crash arterial segment in the area, averaging 17 crashes annually — a pattern regional planners described as systemic rather than isolated.
What caused Barker's Escalade to leave the right lane has not been determined, and state troopers have not said whether medical or mechanical factors played a role. The Cuyahoga County Coroner's Office has not indicated when autopsy or toxicology findings will be complete.
