A shooting near Mt. Hood Street and Owens Avenue in northeast Las Vegas sent one victim to the hospital Friday night, and police have not yet said whether anyone has been arrested. Las Vegas police responded to the scene around 7:30 p.m., according to LVMPD.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department confirmed it was investigating the shooting, according to KLAS 8 News Now, which sent a reporter to the scene. The station reported that the victim was transported to the hospital, though the victim's condition remains unknown. Reporter Jenelle Vannoy's report notes that 8 News Now is still working to determine what led up to the shooting and whether anyone has been arrested in connection with it.
Where the Shooting Happened
The intersection sits in the unincorporated Sunrise Manor community, straddling the border of the 89110 and 89156 ZIP codes, an area of single-family homes, mobile home developments, and local commercial services, according to Compass Real Estate. The location falls within the jurisdiction of LVMPD's Northeast Area Command, which runs out of a station on Cecile Avenue and oversees patrol and community policing for unincorporated northeast Clark County, per the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
Gunshot victims requiring the most intensive trauma care in the Las Vegas valley are typically routed to either University Medical Center on West Charleston Boulevard or Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, which recently gained its own Level I trauma designation, according to The Nevada Independent. UMC had long been the only Level I trauma center in southern Nevada before that change earlier this year, the outlet noted.
A Pattern of Violence Along the Owens Corridor
Friday's shooting adds to a string of violent incidents that have played out along the Owens Avenue corridor and within the broader Northeast Area Command zone in recent months. Just weeks earlier, Hoodline reported that a shooting near East Bonanza Road and North Lamb Boulevard, an intersection just southwest of Owens Avenue, sent one victim to the hospital with a gunshot wound within the same police boundary. Hoodline also previously covered a fatal stabbing on Hinkle Drive, another violent crime investigation that fell under the same command's territory.
The Owens Avenue corridor itself has seen fatal gun violence before. In April 2025, Hoodline reported that two men were killed in a shooting in the East Owens Avenue area following a verbal altercation at a party, a case that led to open murder charges against a 24-year-old suspect. And in the northeast valley more broadly, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that a September 1, 2026 shooting left one person dead, marking another violent incident in the sector earlier this month.
Potential Charges If a Suspect Is Identified
Should investigators identify a shooter, Nevada law provides for steep penalties depending on how the case is charged. Discharging a firearm from inside a motor vehicle on a public street is prosecuted as a Category B felony carrying a mandatory sentence of two to 15 years in state prison, according to LV Criminal Defense, regardless of whether the shooting caused injury. Separately, assault with a deadly weapon is a Category B felony punishable by one to six years in prison and fines up to $5,000 even without physical contact or injury, per the Benjamin Durham Law Firm, since prosecutors need only prove intent to cause reasonable fear of immediate bodily harm.
No arrest has been confirmed in Friday's shooting, and both the victim's condition and the circumstances that led up to the gunfire remain under investigation. 8 News Now says it will continue following the case as police release more information.
