NYPD officers rescued a woman who had moved beyond the Brooklyn Bridge's pedestrian walkway and was positioned on part of the bridge's steel structure above the East River. The response temporarily halted bridge traffic for more than an hour as commuters remained in place.
The woman, who has not been identified, was spotted above the roadway as the NYPD Aviation Unit hovered nearby, according to the New York Post. Members of the NYPD Emergency Service Unit secured themselves to the bridge's cables and climbed toward her. Mariana Madrigal, a 30-year-old sightseeing at the bridge, told the outlet, “There was a girl that was trying to kill herself.”
Police directed drivers who left their vehicles to watch the rescue to return to their cars, the Post reported. After ESU officers reached the woman, she was taken by ambulance to Bellevue Hospital for a psychological evaluation, according to the same account.
An Elite Unit With a Recent Pattern on These Cables
The rescue is not an isolated event on the historic span. Just two months earlier, in July, NYPD Emergency Service Unit officers responded to an incident involving a man walking on the same suspension cables, according to Hoodline's coverage of that incident. The Emergency Service Unit is a combined tactical and technical rescue team of roughly 330 specialized members spread across 10 squads citywide, with Squads 6, 7, and 8 based in Brooklyn, according to Wikipedia. The unit's members are described as specialized. ESU is recognized as the nation's oldest police SWAT unit.
