Cleveland's oldest dedicated wine bar is throwing open its doors — and its patio — for a third straight year of pours, pairings and live music on the brick pedestrian stretch of Ohio City's Market Avenue. Market Avenue Wine Bar will host its third annual Wine Fest on October 10, running from 3 to 8 p.m. at 2521 Market Ave., with tickets priced at $40.
According to Cleveland.com, admission includes five wine tastings of the guest's choice, a signature wine glass to take home, and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. Walk-up tickets will be available while supplies last, though tickets are also being sold in advance through Eventbrite. The event will pour selections from local distributors representing the United States, Europe, South America, Australia and beyond, alongside a lineup of local wineries, per the same report.
Festival-goers can expect food specials designed to pair with the wines being poured, plus the option to buy full glasses and additional tastings beyond what's included with admission. A Wine Bar With Deep Roots on Market Avenue
Market Avenue Wine Bar has been pouring in Cleveland since the fall of 1994, when it opened as the city's first dedicated wine bar, according to the Market Avenue Wine Bar. The business was originally established across the street before relocating to its current address. Today it offers an extensive wine menu alongside hors d'oeuvres, cheeses, hummus, warm French bread and artisanal chocolates, as detailed by CoolCleveland.
The bar sits directly across from Great Lakes Brewing Co. at 2516 Market Avenue, which was founded in 1988 as Ohio's first craft brewery, establishing the street as an early hub for Cleveland's beverage scene, according to Destination Cleveland. Just across West 25th Street stands the West Side Market, which opened in 1912 and remains Cleveland's oldest continuously operating municipally owned public market, per Cleveland Historical.
From Traffic Corridor to Pedestrian Gathering Space
Wine Fest takes place on the brick street itself, adjacent to Market Square. The street sits next to Market Square.
That public use of the land goes back much further. Cleveland Historical notes the site has functioned as a gathering space for more than two centuries, dating to 1822, when developers Barber and Lord set aside a village square for Brooklyn Village before it was annexed into Ohio City and later joined the City of Cleveland in 1854.
