One person was injured and taken to the hospital after a shooting broke out in the parking garage at Haywood Mall in Greenville on Monday afternoon, according to the Greenville Police Department. Officers said no suspects were in custody as of Monday evening, and the Greenville Fire Department was called out to the mall to provide medical assistance.
Fox Carolina News crews were en route to the scene as police and fire crews responded, according to a report from FOX Carolina News. Details on the identities of the shooter or shooters, along with the condition of the injured victim, had not been released as of Monday night, leaving those questions unresolved for now.
A Mall Still Reeling From June's Indoor Shootout
Monday's parking garage shooting marks the second time in roughly three months that gunfire has erupted at Haywood Mall, South Carolina's largest indoor shopping center. On June 13, an altercation between two groups turned violent inside the mall, injuring two people and forcing a full evacuation and a multi-hour lockdown, according to the Post and Courier. Greenville police arrested three teenagers after that shooting, including a 17-year-old charged as an adult with high and aggravated assault and battery, and an 18-year-old who was later hit with additional attempted murder charges tied to a separate, prior incident, per South Carolina Public Radio. One of the June victims, police noted at the time, was an innocent bystander who was shot in the foot.
The June shooting also sparked public criticism from mall workers. At least one former retail employee said she quit shortly afterward because she felt unsupported and unsafe following mall leadership's response, according to WYFF News 4.
South Carolina's Largest Mall, Owned by an Indianapolis Giant
Haywood Mall spans roughly 1.24 million square feet near the intersection of Interstate 385 and Haywood Road. The property is managed by Simon Property Group, according to background compiled in a Wikipedia summary of the property.
Monday's gunfire also comes as the mall pushes ahead with a major redevelopment project. Construction began in late 2026 to convert 83,688 square feet of the long-vacant former Sears anchor space into a $9.28 million Round1 Bowling and Arcade venue, a project Hoodline detailed earlier this month. That Sears space had sat empty since April 2020.
Questions About Mall Security
It remains an open question whether mall management will face renewed pressure from city officials or tenants to strengthen security protocols in the wake of Monday's shooting.
Monday's incident is not the first fatal gun scare at the property. In August 2025, Greenville Police responded to a fatal shooting on Haywood Mall property that authorities determined to be a suicide, according to footage reviewed on YouTube. The mall has also been the subject of a recent Hoodline story about a mural honoring a Greenville man lost to suicide, installed to raise mental health awareness at the site just days before Monday's shooting.
Part of a Wider Pattern of Gun Violence in Greenville County
A pre-dawn shooting outside a Piedmont Highway bar also took place in September.
During past emergency responses at Haywood Mall, the City of Greenville has established a public pickup site on the ground floor of the Dillard's parking garage and coordinated with Greenlink to bring in air-conditioned transit buses for waiting shoppers, a protocol used during the June lockdown. It is not yet clear whether that same staging plan was activated Monday. Police have not said whether any suspects have since been identified or located.
