A 38-year-old woman was killed and five other people were shot in East Baltimore on Wednesday night, according to police. Officers were called out after a ShotSpotter alert flagged gunfire in the area, setting off a chaotic scene that left investigators piecing together what happened.
According to WBAL-TV, officers responded to the 1200 block of Patterson Park Avenue around 6:46 p.m. Wednesday to investigate the ShotSpotter alert. When they arrived, they found two women, ages 38 and 34, along with two men, ages 29 and 23, all suffering from gunshot wounds. The 38-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel, the outlet reported.
Two additional men, ages 18 and 30, did not wait for police to find them. Instead, per the same account, they walked into an area hospital seeking treatment for gunshot wounds, bringing the total number of people shot to six.
Separate Report Describes a Different Scene
A separate report from ABC News described a Saturday-night shooting differently, saying a 38-year-old man was killed and five other people were wounded. That account placed the incident near the intersection of Spaulding and Queensberry Avenues in northwest Baltimore, and said the wounded included a 5-year-old girl struck in the hand, along with a 23-year-old woman and three men ages 32, 33 and 52. It remains unclear how these details relate to the Wednesday-night Patterson Park Avenue shooting described by other outlets.
Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley, addressing the shooting described in the ABC News report, offered few specifics. “All we know is there's multiple rounds fired, multiple victims,” Worley said, according to that outlet. Police had not released any details about a suspect as of that report, and the motive remained under investigation.
Streets Blocked Off as Investigation Continues
Officers responded to the 1400 block of East Fayette Street on Wednesday in a shooting involving seven people in the Douglas Homes neighborhood, according to CBS News. Police said all seven victims were expected to survive, and a 3-year-old boy underwent surgery, according to that report.
No arrests had been announced in connection with the shooting, and investigators had not released a suspect description.
