A 28-year-old woman from Orlando died Saturday afternoon after the car she was driving left Interstate 10, slammed into several trees in the median and caught fire in Gadsden County. A 15-year-old girl riding with her survived the crash near the Chattahoochee exit.
The crash happened around 1:40 p.m. Saturday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. As reported by WTXL ABC 27, the car went off I-10 into the median and struck several trees before stopping and catching fire in the eastbound lane. Both the driver and her teenage passenger were initially reported in critical condition and taken to Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare, per FHP.
The driver was later pronounced deceased at HCA Florida Gadsden Emergency in Quincy, according to the same report. The 15-year-old passenger was ultimately taken to Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare with only minor injuries. What led up to the crash remains unknown, WTXL's reporting notes.
Freestanding ER Played a Key Role in Response
The Quincy hospital where the driver was taken is a 24/7 freestanding emergency department affiliated with HCA Florida Capital Hospital, established specifically to eliminate what had been a roughly 30-minute transport time to Tallahassee hospitals for local trauma patients, according to HCA Florida Healthcare. That setup explains why the driver was routed to the Quincy facility while her passenger was sent on to Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare.
Florida Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by Gadsden County EMS and Gadsden County Fire Rescue, the station's report states. Local emergency crews in the county handle a heavy workload beyond highway wrecks — HCA Florida Gadsden Emergency alone receives more than 1,800 local emergency transports annually, according to county emergency records posted on Cloudfront.net.
Lanes Closed for Hours During Investigation
Roadblocks went up on both sides of the interstate as troopers investigated. By 3:30 p.m., both eastbound lanes and the westbound fast lane were blocked, though the westbound slow lane remained open, per the same account. The inside lanes in both directions were reopened by 3:30 p.m., and all lanes were eventually cleared once the investigation wrapped up.
Part of a Troubling Pattern on I-10
The crash adds to a string of severe run-off-road, tree-impact wrecks along the same stretch of interstate. Just months earlier, on March 24, 2026, a separate fatal crash on I-10 near mile marker 179 in Gadsden County killed one woman and injured two teenagers when a rear-end collision pushed a vehicle off the road and into a tree, according to the Miami Personal Injury Lawyers Blog.

Official determinations about what caused the crash — including any role of speed, mechanical failure, or driver distraction — remain pending as FHP's investigation continues.
The Florida Department of Transportation has already committed more than $1.2 million for capital improvements at I-10 rest areas in Gadsden County starting in fiscal year 2026, alongside ongoing interstate resurfacing projects, according to planning documents from the Capital Region Transportation Planning Agency.
