A human skull discovered by hikers in the desert outside Pahrump has been identified as the remains of Shaun Beasley, a 45-year-old man who vanished during a camping trip on Shadow Mountain back in September 2022. The discovery closes a chapter on a mystery that has lingered over the Nye County community for four years, though key questions about how Beasley died remain unanswered.
Hikers Stumble Onto Grim Discovery
The saga began when hikers came across a skull in the desert near Barney Road and Nye Road, on the outskirts of Pahrump. According to KTNV, the hikers found the remains on May 25, 2026, while a separate account from FOX5 Vegas places the discovery a day earlier, on May 24, with the Nye County Sheriff's Office Dispatch center logging a report at roughly 7 p.m. that evening. Officials confirmed the remains were human, but at the time, investigators said they could not speculate on how long the skull had been at the location or whose it was.
That uncertainty stretched on for months. The Nye County Sheriff's Office was unable to identify the individual or determine how he died, and as recently as this week, per KTNV, the Clark County Coroner's Office had still not determined Beasley's cause of death. The station reports that investigators eventually matched the remains to Beasley through a November 2023 entry in the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, or NAMUS, which corresponded to his name, age, and race.
A Hiking Trip That Went Terribly Wrong
Beasley's disappearance dates back to September 5, 2022, when he was 42 years old and set out with a friend on what was supposed to be a camping and hiking trip at Shadow Mountain, according to Crime Solvers Central. As the pair made their way up the mountain, they became separated. The website notes the two managed to stay in contact for a time through their cell phones before Beasley stopped responding, according to NAMUS records cited in the same reporting.
Beasley was reported missing from Pahrump shortly after, and search and rescue crews launched an effort to find him. Those efforts turned up nothing. The Nye County Sheriff's Office previously said the investigation remained ongoing, and as of this week, the Clark County Coroner's Office had not determined a cause of death. It is unclear whether authorities have connected the recovery site directly to where Beasley was last in contact with his hiking companion back in 2022.
