Palumbo's Italian Eatery, a longtime pizza shop on Harrisburg's 2nd Street, has closed its doors, and a listing on Yelp suggests it won't reopen until July 1, 2027. The business's phone number has been disconnected, and no cause for the closure has been made public.
The shutdown was first reported by WHP, whose report, credited to Samantha Sobel, noted the pizzeria's disconnected line and the Yelp reopening date but did not identify why the shop went dark. Palumbo's sits at 104 N. 2nd Street in the heart of what's locally known as Harrisburg's Restaurant Row, according to Visit Hershey & Harrisburg, the main corridor for foot traffic and nightlife in the capital city's central business district.
The 2nd Street storefront was actually a second location for the brand, which first opened across the Susquehanna River in Mechanicsburg before expanding into downtown Harrisburg, per the same tourism bureau's listing. Before the pause, the eatery took orders through independent platforms Slice and Uber Eats, according to a menu listing on Slice, digital channels that have become vital revenue streams for small urban pizzerias trying to stay afloat.
A Shop With a Colorful Past on a Late-Night Strip
Palumbo's late-night hours catering to the downtown bar crowd have long been part of its sales model. Back in September 2014, owner Pietro Mannino reported a late-night altercation involving pepper spray inside the shop that forced an emergency cleanup, an incident chronicled at the time by Fox43. That history underscores how central late-night weekend traffic has been to keeping the lights on at the 2nd Street pizzeria over the years.
Restaurant Row's Long Road Back From the Pandemic
The temporary closure lands amid a broader, years-long effort to keep 2nd Street's dining scene afloat. In May 2021, the City of Harrisburg and the Harrisburg Downtown Improvement District launched Saturday Nights in the City, closing portions of 2nd Street to vehicle traffic so restaurants could expand seating onto the sidewalks and roadway during pandemic recovery, a program detailed by Fox43 at the time.
More recently, the Harristown Development Corporation, the Harrisburg Downtown Improvement District, and Visit Hershey Harrisburg released a report in September 2023 titled The State of Downtown Harrisburg 2023-2024, which detailed efforts to convert vacant office space into residential units to help replace the foot traffic lost as state office workers shifted away from traditional lunchtime dining. And in March 2026, the Shapiro Administration announced $425,000 in state funding for downtown Harrisburg revitalization, with $75,000 earmarked directly for the Harrisburg Downtown Improvement District's safety and security efforts, according to Downtown Harrisburg.
The improvement district, which operates out of 22 N. 2nd Street, funds daily street-cleaning crews, safety ambassadors, and commercial marketing for the corridor through special assessment fees on commercial properties, per the Harrisburg Downtown Improvement District. The district has also run Harrisburg Restaurant Week every September since 2008, an event originally launched as “Pamper Your Palate on Restaurant Row” to draw regional diners to 2nd Street eateries through fixed-price menus, according to Harrisburg Restaurant Week's own account of its history.
A Tough Landscape for Independent Pizzerias
Palumbo's pause plays out against a statewide restaurant industry that remains sizable but competitive. Pennsylvania's food service sector comprised 26,654 eating and drinking locations generating $46.3 billion in total sales in 2025, according to figures from the National Restaurant Association, with the industry standing as the state's third-largest private employer. For now, it remains unclear what led Palumbo's to shutter, and whether the July 2027 date listed on Yelp will hold once the pizzeria's doors reopen on Restaurant Row.
