A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a vehicle Thursday evening on State Route 18 near Tradepost Road in Lucerne Valley. The fatal collision was reported at about 6:45 p.m. and involved a man described only as wearing blue jeans and brown boots, whose identity has not been released.
According to VVNG, a witness said the driver remained at the scene following the crash and was operating a larger truck that was towing a dump trailer. The same witness relayed that the driver said the pedestrian suddenly entered the roadway in front of the vehicle before being struck.
That account has not yet been independently confirmed by authorities, the outlet reported. No official law-enforcement description of how the crash unfolded has been made public, and it remains unclear which agency is leading the investigation beyond a reference to CHP logs.
Highway 18 Partially Shut Down During Investigation
The westbound lanes of Highway 18 were blocked while authorities investigated the fatal collision, while the eastbound lanes remained open to traffic. Westbound motorists were able to use nearby side streets to get around the closure, per the CHP logs cited in the report.
Details about the pedestrian, including his age and where he was from, have not been disclosed. It is also unclear whether roadway lighting, weather conditions, or the presence of a marked crossing played any role in the collision, and no citations or arrests connected to the crash have been reported.
Not the First Deadly Crash Along Highway 18
Fatal pedestrian crashes have occurred elsewhere along the Highway 18 corridor in the High Desert. In a separate incident, 37-year-old Apple Valley resident Nicholas Melendez was killed after being struck by a Chevrolet Sonic on Outer Highway 18 North near Erie Road, according to a report from Yahoo News. That collision happened around 5:10 a.m., and the driver in that case also remained at the scene and cooperated with deputies. Westbound lanes there were shut down for about four hours during the investigation, a longer closure than what was reported in Thursday's Lucerne Valley crash.
Federal transportation officials have highlighted pedestrian safety as an ongoing concern on higher-speed roadways. The Federal Highway Administration notes that devices such as pedestrian hybrid beacons are designed specifically to help people cross busier roads at midblock locations, according to guidance from the Federal Highway Administration. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration separately offers broader resources aimed at preventing pedestrian injuries and deaths for both drivers and walkers, per the agency's guidance.
No further updates on the Lucerne Valley victim's identity or the status of the investigation have been released.
