A pedestrian standing in the main lanes of South Interstate 45 was struck and killed by a northbound Jeep Cherokee late Saturday night near 18600 Gulf Freeway, and the 50-year-old driver was questioned and released at the scene after showing no signs of intoxication. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the man dead there on the freeway, and his identity has not been released pending notification to family.
According to City of Houston News, the crash happened around 9:15 p.m. Saturday when the gray Jeep Cherokee, traveling northbound, struck the man as he stood on the main travel lanes of the Gulf Freeway. The driver remained at the scene, per the report. Houston Police Department Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant A. Yasin and Officer C. Ballard are handling the investigation, which HPD says remains ongoing under incident number 122258726-P.
Pedestrian Right-of-Way Rules
Under Texas Transportation Code § 552.005, pedestrians who cross a roadway outside a marked or unmarked crosswalk are legally required to yield the right-of-way to vehicles, according to FindLaw. The same law source notes that Texas Transportation Code § 552.008 keeps drivers under an ongoing legal duty to exercise due care and avoid hitting pedestrians, including sounding a horn when necessary, meaning a failure to yield does not automatically clear a motorist if speed or inattention played a role.
Hoodline's earlier coverage of a Vehicular Crimes Division case on Mesa Drive said a Mercedes driver stayed at the scene, showed no signs of impairment, and was questioned and released. The investigation into the 18600 Gulf Freeway crash remains ongoing.
Identity Withheld Until Kin Are Notified
The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences will identify the deceased man and notify his family before his name is made public.
A Freeway With a Troubling Pattern
This is not an isolated tragedy along South I-45. Hoodline reported a separate fatal pedestrian strike in the northbound lanes near El Dorado Boulevard that shut down all northbound lanes on the same day as this crash, September 26. Weeks earlier, Hoodline documented a fatal bus-pedestrian crash and a woman killed trying to cross the freeway near Edgebrook Drive.
Houston recorded 301 traffic deaths in 2024.
Statewide, the numbers are just as stark. Crash data cited by The Night Docket shows 772 pedestrians were killed in Texas traffic accidents in 2024, accounting for nearly 19 percent of all traffic fatalities despite pedestrians being involved in only about 1 percent of total crashes.
For now, HPD's Vehicular Crimes Division investigation into the 18600 Gulf Freeway crash remains open. The circumstances that put the pedestrian in the freeway's main lanes have not been detailed by investigators.
