A pedestrian was found dead along a Sonoma County road near Graton Monday morning, in what investigators describe as an apparent hit-and-run, and the California Highway Patrol is now looking into whether the case is connected to a bicycle collision reported about 11 hours earlier.
CHP units responded to the area of Guerneville Road and Frei Road, east of Graton, shortly before 8 a.m. Monday, according to kron4.com. Officers arrived to find the victim's body in a ditch at the edge of the road, along with broken glasses and headphones scattered in the street, the station reported. A CHP fatality feed logged the discovery at 7:45 a.m., describing the person as found on the edge of the road in a ditch.
A Bicycle Found Miles From the Scene
Investigators located a bicycle with major damage one to two miles from where the body was found, and the same feed noted the bike could be associated with the crash. Per The Press Democrat, Officer David DeRutte said the possible associated bicycle turned up about one to two miles away from the fatality site. The station's report adds that CHP is investigating the fatality and is examining whether it connects to a bicycle collision that was called in about 11 hours before the body was discovered.
According to a CHP traffic log cited by the same outlet, a driver of a dark-colored Honda reported hitting a bicycle in the road near Guerneville and Frei roads the night before, Sunday, September 27. The driver told dispatchers she moved the bicycle to the side of the road and said, per the log, that she was only passing along the information. The CHP fatality feed separately referenced a possible associated log at 8:28 a.m. Monday describing a vehicle-versus-bicycle report, though the wording in that log remains tentative rather than confirmed.
Eastbound Lane Blocked During Investigation
The eastbound lane of Guerneville Road was blocked while CHP investigators worked the scene, according to the fatality feed. CHP continued investigating whether the fatality was connected to the earlier bicycle report. Neither the identity of the person killed nor whether that person was walking or riding a bicycle has been established in available reporting.
The Guerneville Road case echoes an earlier Sonoma County crash in the Petaluma area, where a man riding a bicycle was believed to have been the victim of a fatal hit-and-run sometime late Friday night or early Saturday morning, according to SFGate. In that incident, CHP received a call about an unresponsive bicyclist around 9:30 a.m. on Rainsville Road near Stony Point Road, at the boundary of Petaluma and unincorporated Sonoma County. The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, and CHP said evidence indicated the vehicle involved had left the area, SFGate reported.
