A 26-year-old Pittsburgh man has been sentenced to 90 months in federal prison after a 2021 drug sting in Monroeville ended with him ramming a detective's car, fleeing on foot onto a highway, and getting caught with nearly 1,000 bags of fentanyl and heroin. Darion Ethridge was sentenced by U.S. District Judge William S. Stickman IV on September 14, 2026, on charges of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and heroin and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
The case traces back to June 24, 2021, when state police and local law enforcement set up a detail in Monroeville after receiving information that a man driving a black Jeep Cherokee with tinted windows would deliver 10 bricks of heroin to a local hotel, according to WPXI. Officers located the vehicle in a hotel parking lot, and a detective parked behind the Jeep with emergency lights and sirens activated before instructing the driver to exit. Ethridge instead started the vehicle and reversed it into the detective's car, according to the same report.
A Chase That Spilled Onto Northern Pike
Officers boxed in the Jeep, but Ethridge drove through the parking lot, ran from the vehicle on foot, and was eventually pursued and arrested, per WPXI's account. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported additional detail on the escalation, noting the sting took place on Mosside Boulevard, and that Ethridge scuffled briefly with an officer at a dead end before fleeing onto Northern Pike, where he stopped highway traffic before he was finally apprehended.
Inside the Jeep, law enforcement found 991 bags of a fentanyl and heroin mixture and seized $3,952 from Ethridge, per WPXI. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette referred to the haul as 20 bricks. Officers also found a loaded, stolen handgun in the vehicle.
Stolen Gun, Prison ID Card Found Inside the Jeep
According to a U.S. Department of Justice announcement, the loaded .40-caliber handgun had been reported stolen out of Leechburg, Pennsylvania. Investigators also recovered a medical marijuana card and a Pennsylvania Department of Corrections card bearing Ethridge's name inside the vehicle, the Justice Department said.
Ethridge was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm because of four prior felony convictions handed down in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas, per the Justice Department's announcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brendan J. McKenna prosecuted the case, which grew out of an operation involving the Monroeville Police Department and the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General.
From Local Sting to Federal Courtroom
Ethridge pleaded guilty before Judge Stickman and ultimately received a 90-month sentence. In Ethridge's case, a municipal traffic-lot bust in Monroeville ended up in U.S. District Court five years later.

Ethridge's arrest happened near the height of regional fentanyl saturation, but the local drug landscape has shifted substantially since then. Fatal drug overdoses in Allegheny County fell from 665 deaths in 2023 to 432 in 2024 and an estimated 344 in 2025, according to county health data cited by CBS Pittsburgh. Testing by Prevention Point Pittsburgh similarly found the share of local street drug samples containing fentanyl dropped from 85% in 2023 to 59% in 2025, the outlet reported.
