A pedestrian standing on the center median of East Parker Road was thrown into the side of an oncoming vehicle Saturday evening after a silver Ford Explorer barreled across the median into oncoming traffic, setting off a seven-vehicle wreck that sent at least three people to area hospitals. Plano police and Plano Fire-Rescue responded to the crash at the intersection of eastbound East Parker Road and Avenue K, describing it as a serious injury traffic crash involving a pedestrian.
According to the Plano Texas Police Department, the Explorer had been traveling eastbound on East Parker Road west of Avenue K at a high rate of speed when it crossed Avenue K and then crossed the center median into the westbound lanes. The SUV kept going eastbound while in the westbound lanes, striking the pedestrian on the median before slamming into five vehicles that were stopped at a red light. In all, police say the crash damaged seven vehicles, including the Explorer itself. The pedestrian, the Explorer's driver, and another motorist involved in the crash were all transported to local hospitals for treatment, though police said Saturday that their medical conditions remained unknown as of Sunday. No other injuries were reported among those involved.
In the crash's immediate aftermath, officers closed southbound Avenue K at Avenue N before reopening that stretch, while eastbound Parker Road stayed shut down as the department's Traffic Unit worked to reconstruct how the wreck unfolded, according to WFAA. The investigation remained active as of Sunday, with no determination yet made about what caused the Explorer to leave its lane at such speed.
A Corridor Already Flagged for Danger
Parker Road carries some of the heaviest traffic volume in East Plano, and the posted speed limit along its major sections runs 45 miles per hour, a threshold that turns any lane departure into a high-energy collision, per City of Carrollton roadway data used as regional speed context. And this is not the first fatal or near-fatal wreck on the road this year — a July 24 crash at West Parker Road and Mission Ridge Road killed a 27-year-old passenger and hospitalized a driver after an SUV struck a pickup truck and a light pole, per Hoodline.
What Happens if Impairment Is Found
Investigators have not said whether speed alone, a mechanical problem, a medical emergency, or impairment caused the Explorer to cross the median — that remains an open question for the Traffic Unit's ongoing probe. The answer matters legally: under Texas Penal Code § 49.07, a driver who operates a vehicle while intoxicated and accidentally causes serious bodily injury to another person can be charged with Intoxication Assault, a third-degree felony carrying two to ten years in prison and fines up to $10,000 per count, according to FindLaw.
Texas law also governs how pedestrians and drivers are expected to share the road at intersections like this one. Under Texas Transportation Code Chapter 552, drivers must yield to pedestrians lawfully in marked or unmarked crosswalks, while pedestrians crossing outside crosswalks must yield to oncoming traffic — a framework that crash reconstruction teams will likely weigh given that the pedestrian in this case was standing on a median divider rather than in a crosswalk when the Explorer struck.
