The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says a man with a prior conviction for a sex offense against children tried to lure a girl away from her school bus stop. The allegation appeared Friday morning in a post on Sheriff Grady Judd’s account, which referred to the man by a nickname rather than providing his given name. The post did not identify the date or location of the encounter.
The sheriff’s office also did not specify the offense underlying the earlier conviction, when or where it occurred, or what happened after the alleged bus-stop encounter. The post did not say whether the man was arrested, charged or being held, and provided no information about the girl or her family. Those details remain unresolved based on the account made public so far.
What the registry can—and cannot—show
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office directs residents to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s statewide database for information about registered sex offenders and predators. That registry can provide address information for people required to register, but a listing alone would not establish either the alleged approach at the bus stop or the specific conviction described by the sheriff’s office.
The broader scale of Florida’s supervision system also does not identify the man in this case. A December 2024 review by the Florida Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability said the Department of Corrections supervised 6,079 sex offenders living in Florida communities as of October 2024. The same review reported that approximately 7% of registered sexual offenders and 12% of sexual predators living in Florida communities were homeless or transient. Those statewide figures provide background, not evidence about this incident.
Separate Polk County enforcement examples
Polk County has previously publicized enforcement involving alleged sexual solicitation of minors, but those cases are not presented as connected to the current allegation. A Florida Senate analysis, citing the Sheriff’s Office, said an undercover operation announced Oct. 10, 2023, resulted in six arrests involving people who allegedly communicated online with individuals they believed were children or guardians to solicit unlawful sexual activity with minors. The analysis describes an online-solicitation operation, not an alleged attempt to lure a child from a bus stop.
In another example, the Sheriff’s Office said deputies and Department of Corrections probation officers arrested four Polk County offenders or predators on Oct. 31, 2017, for failing to comply with sex-offender laws during a Halloween enforcement initiative. That account concerned registration or probation violations and does not establish a pattern of bus-stop incidents.
For now, the current case rests on the Sheriff’s Office’s brief social-media characterization. Until an arrest report, charging document, court record or fuller law-enforcement statement becomes available, the circumstances of the alleged encounter and the man’s legal status cannot be independently described beyond what the office has said.
