PWHL Detroit will christen its home ice on Saturday, Dec. 12, hosting the New York Sirens at noon ET in the franchise's first-ever regular-season game at Little Caesars Arena. Tickets for the milestone matchup went on sale at 11 a.m. ET Monday through Ticketmaster, giving Detroit hockey fans their first chance to grab seats for the historic opener.
The announcement, detailed by thepwhl.com, confirms Detroit as one of the league's four new expansion teams for the 2026-27 season. Before it ever steps onto its own ice, though, PWHL Detroit will make its official season debut on the road, facing PWHL Las Vegas on Sunday, Dec. 6, at 8 p.m. ET at T-Mobile Arena.
As The Detroit News notes, Detroit has long been viewed as a natural target for PWHL expansion, and the league has gained popularity quickly since its founding in 2023 and its first season in January 2024. Detroit joins Las Vegas, Hamilton and San Jose as the league grows to 12 teams heading into its fourth season.
A Doubleheader Weekend at LCA
The home opener will not be the only hockey on tap that Saturday. According to WXYZ, the noon puck drop against New York will be followed by the Detroit Red Wings hosting the Florida Panthers at 7 p.m., turning Dec. 12 into a full day of hockey at the arena. The station also reports that The Spot Detroit — Detroit 20 will serve as PWHL Detroit's official broadcast partner for its inaugural season, carrying games on free, over-the-air television.
One detail is still missing from the rollout: the team's official name. As of Monday, that name had not yet been announced, according to ClickOnDetroit. The full 2026-27 regular-season schedule, along with national broadcast assignments, is set to be revealed Friday, Oct. 2, per the league's own announcement.
Detroit's Track Record With the PWHL
This is not Detroit's first taste of PWHL hockey. The city has already hosted league Takeover Tour stops, part of a circuit that drew roughly 200,000 fans across 16 neutral-site games during the 2025-26 season, the league reported. A March 28 Takeover Tour stop in Detroit was broadcast on ION, marking the PWHL's first-ever national linear television game in the United States.
Detroit's appetite for the league has already produced some eye-popping numbers. A PWHL game at Little Caesars Arena between Montreal and New York set a league record for the venue with 15,938 fans in attendance, and the article notes nearly 54,000 fans have turned out for PWHL games at the arena over the past three years. WXYZ also reported that Detroit set a U.S. attendance record for a professional women's hockey game in 2025.
League-Wide Growth Fuels the Expansion Push
Detroit's arrival comes amid a broader surge for the league. The PWHL says it drew 1,116,497 fans across 120 regular-season games in 2025-26, averaging 9,304 spectators per game — a 28% jump over the entirety of the 2024-25 season, including playoffs, and a 71% increase over the league's inaugural campaign. Successful Takeover Tour stops have helped make Detroit a target for expansion.
