Quaker Steak & Lube has permanently closed its restaurant at 10 Chrome Drive in Greenville, ending an 18-year run near the Interstate 85/Interstate 385 interchange. The motorsports-themed chain thanked its guests and staff for their support and encouraged them to visit its other locations, but did not give a reason for the shutdown.
The closure was first reported by FOX Carolina News, whose account of the announcement did not specify what prompted the exit. The Chrome Drive location had opened in 2008 off Garlington Road near the highway junction, according to reporting from the Post and Courier, which describes the area as busy and near the Woodruff Road retail corridor and the I-85/I-385 interchange.
The Greenville closure is not an isolated event. In late June 2026, parent operator JDK Management Company issued a corporate update announcing plans to shutter a small number of Quaker Steak & Lube locations over several months, following reviews of lease terms, local market conditions, and long-term growth potential, according to the Tribune Chronicle. Before Greenville went dark, JDK had already permanently closed locations in Clearwater, Florida, on July 5, and in Boardman, Ohio, in mid-July — the Boardman restaurant had operated for 30 years.
A Chain Shrinking Fast
The pullback has been steep. Industry tracking cited by TheStreet found that the 52-year-old chain's website listed 25 restaurants as of the cited Monday, down from more than 60 locations previously touted by the company, per the same outlet's reporting.
Quaker Steak & Lube's corporate ownership has shifted hands in recent years. TravelCenters of America, which had acquired the chain in 2016, sold the standalone restaurant brand to franchisee and hospitality operator JDK Management Company for $5 million in April 2021, according to CSP Daily News. The chain itself dates back to 1974 and has roots in Sharon, Pennsylvania. The brand has a garage-inspired theme.
The End of Chrome Drive Bike Nites
For Upstate motorcycle riders, the Chrome Drive restaurant meant more than burgers and wings. It sat directly next to Harley-Davidson of Greenville at 30 Chrome Drive, and the two businesses co-hosted weekly Chrome Drive Bike Nites featuring live music, motorcycle runs, and outdoor food service, according to event listings from Harley-Davidson of Greenville and Born To Ride magazine. Harley-Davidson of Greenville is at that address.
What becomes of the vacant restaurant space, and where the weekly bike nights might resettle, remain open questions. Nearby, a 5.97-acre commercial lot across from the Quaker Steak & Lube and Harley-Davidson properties has been marketed for lease or sale as an interchange redevelopment site, according to real estate documents from Cardinal Commercial Properties, which describe the parcel as zoned for industrial use with direct frontage on Interstate 85.
Other Greenville Restaurant Closures
The Chrome Drive closure comes alongside another casual-dining exit in the Greenville market this year. Condado Tacos permanently closed its location at Magnolia Park on Woodruff Road earlier in 2026 following a $51,000 back-rent lawsuit from its landlord, court filings reported by Hoodline showed; that restaurant had opened on Woodruff Road in February 2023.
Back in June, the Clearwater closure drew reaction from gearhead and biker communities — a dynamic that appears to be repeating itself now in Greenville, where Chrome Drive's weekly gatherings lose their longtime anchor.
