One person suffered life-threatening injuries in a shooting on Reliance Street in Northwest Charlotte, according to medical responders. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded to the scene on an assault with a deadly weapon call and are conducting an active investigation into what happened.
The shooting was reported on Reliance Street, according to WCNC Charlotte, which first reported that the victim's injuries were described as life-threatening according to MEDIC. Reliance Street sits in the Thomasboro-Hoskins neighborhood, a historic residential pocket of Charlotte's Westside corridor accessible off Bradford Drive near Freedom Drive and Interstate 85, according to Redfin.
The area falls under the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Freedom Division, headquartered at 4150 Wilkinson Blvd, which patrols three sectors across West and Northwest Charlotte, per the department's own patrol area breakdown. CMPD divides its citywide jurisdiction into 13 patrol divisions total. No arrests have been announced, and the department's investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
A Neighborhood Already on Edge
Emergency treatment and transport for the victim came through Mecklenburg EMS Agency, known locally as MEDIC, an independent countywide system governed by a board representing Atrium Health, Novant Health, and Mecklenburg County, according to a report by JEMS. The agency recently expanded its capacity, having reached a deal with the City of Charlotte last year to add 50 new EMT positions and 10 additional ambulances for the current fiscal year, as reported by EMS1. That same agreement includes an annual $499,035 subsidy to the Charlotte Fire Department.
Thomasboro-Hoskins has drawn scrutiny for its violent crime rate, which sits roughly 61% above the national average, according to neighborhood safety data published by DoorProfit. The area is home to about 5,500 residents in a densely populated suburban footprint on Charlotte's Westside. The Reliance Street shooting comes just days after gunfire struck an occupied home on nearby Grass Ridge Drive, where a 49-year-old woman was seriously injured among seven people inside, as Hoodline previously reported. Police said handguns and rifles were both used in that earlier incident.
What Charges Could Look Like
If a suspect is identified and arrested, North Carolina law lays out a range of potential felony charges. Under North Carolina General Statute § 14-32, an assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury is a Class E felony, while an assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury escalates to a Class C felony, which can carry mandatory prison sentences ranging from 44 to 182 months depending on the defendant's prior record. Charlotte's midyear 2026 public safety update, released in July, reported an 8% decrease in violent crime citywide compared to the same period in 2025, even as homicides ticked up slightly by 3%, with 40 recorded cases. CMPD also reported a 75% homicide clearance rate during that same stretch. Even with those citywide gains, isolated shootings like the one on Reliance Street continue to test residents in West and Northwest Charlotte corridors.
City officials have also moved to bolster police presence in the broader area. A procurement document published by the North Carolina Electronic Vendor Portal in April 2024 shows plans for a net-zero carbon CMPD Northwest Division station at 1800 Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road, intended to relieve workload pressure on the Freedom and North divisions by creating a dedicated station between existing patrol boundaries.
