A former finance chairman for the Democratic Party of Virginia has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison after being convicted of distributing child sexual abuse material, capping a case that began when he tried to arrange a meeting through a dating app with someone he believed was the father of a nine-year-old boy. Randon Alexander Sprinkle, a Richmond political strategist, was convicted of distributing the material after FBI agents searched his home and seized his devices last fall.
According to the WJLA report on Sprinkle's sentencing, the case traces back to an undercover FBI agent posing as the father of a minor child on a dating app. Sprinkle used the app to contact that account and, per the Department of Justice, expressed interest in traveling to Washington, D.C., to meet the user and sexually abuse the purported nine-year-old son. He also sent a video depicting two adults sexually abusing a minor, according to the DOJ.
Per a report from LifeZette, Sprinkle was involved in an FBI child sexual abuse material case. The DOJ says he used a dating app to contact another user. His political résumé included his role as finance chairman for the Democratic Party of Virginia.
Devices Seized in October Search
FBI agents searched Sprinkle's Richmond residence on October 16, 2025, seizing his cellphone and two laptop computers, per the DOJ. The Roanoke Times reported the search and seizure occurred a day earlier, on October 15, 2025; the discrepancy in dates between the two accounts has not been resolved. Either way, illegal material was found on the devices.
Sprinkle's cellphone contained 43 child sexual abuse material files, according to the DOJ, while one of the seized laptops held two additional files. The files included depictions of abuse involving toddler-aged children, the DOJ says.
From Indictment to Guilty Plea
A federal grand jury indicted Sprinkle in January 2026. He was later convicted on the distribution charges, according to the DOJ.
State political disclosure data compiled by the Virginia Public Access Project lists Sprinkle's private employer as Alexander Strategies LLC, clarifying his professional work outside of his party board positions.
Investigation Tied to Nationwide Task Force
The investigation involved the FBI, according to the DOJ. The case falls under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative launched in May 2006 to combat what the agency describes as the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia prosecuted the case, according to the DOJ. The case involved federal charges.
Following news of Sprinkle's arrest, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported on the case. Sprinkle, described in coverage as a former Democratic political strategist from Richmond, is now set to serve his 10-year sentence in federal prison.
