Mykonos Grill is closing its original storefront for good. The Greek restaurant at 121 Congressional Lane will shut its doors on December 31, 2026. Mykonos also has a location in Potomac.
The Rockville restaurant dates to 1998, making its planned departure the end of a nearly three-decade run at the Congressional Lane site. Owner Angelo Mitsotakis has said the Potomac restaurant will carry over about 80% of the Rockville menu—including trout, swordfish, moussaka, oven-baked potatoes and bread—with prices unchanged, shifting many of the flagship’s familiar dishes to its newer dining room, he told Store Reporter.
According to Store Reporter, Mykonos Restaurant is a 15-month-old outpost inside Cabin John Village. The Rockville flagship is at 121 Congressional Lane. The Potomac location opened on June 13, 2025, in the 7965 Tuckerman Lane space previously occupied by Broadway Pizza, which had closed there in late 2021, the same outlet reported.
Local Recognition
The restaurant's menu earned national attention: Washington Post food critic Tom Sietsema named Mykonos Grill one of his seven favorite places to eat in the D.C. region back in May 2021, singling out its classic moussaka and lamb chops, according to the same account carried by the same outlet.
The culinary handoff has been in the works for a while. Executive Chef Michael Zacharis, a Piraeus-born chef who trained in high-end hotel kitchens in Athens, was brought in as a consultant and head chef to craft the menu for the Cabin John Village location, according to City Lifestyle. His background in luxury Athens dining venues has shaped the Potomac restaurant's offerings since it opened.
The expansion is led by Mitsotakis and his wife, Rodi Tzani, whose local restaurant portfolio has included Mykonos Grill and Gyroland. Before the Potomac opening, Mitsotakis worked in Greece’s hospitality industry, including as restaurant director at Astir Palace Hotel and Grand Resort Lagonissi. The new location extended a business rooted in Rockville into an upscale Greek-dining format, the MoCo Show reported.
Streamlining a Local Restaurant Empire
Another Local Restaurant Closure Gyroland, a fast-casual Greek spot at 1701 Rockville Pike, closed in late 2025, ending an eight-year run as the casual counterpart to Mykonos Grill, per the MoCo Show.
Gyroland’s closure also showed how the restaurant group has consolidated some of its offerings: the fast-casual sibling shut down after the Congressional Village shopping center was sold to a group planning an Asian-business supercenter. Mykonos Grill took over Gyroland’s gyros, wraps and open-faced sandwiches, keeping them on its menu for lunch dine-in and for takeout and delivery. The move preserved some of Gyroland’s fare locally even as its separate storefront closed, Store Reporter reported.
