A Vietnamese fast-casual chain known for rice bowls, banh mi, and pho is setting up shop in Fairfax City, taking over a retail space at Fairfax Pointe that sat empty after a longtime Tex-Mex tenant closed its doors this summer. Roll Play Grill has confirmed plans to open at 10955 Fairfax Boulevard, Suite 100, with a storefront already under construction and a target opening of November 2026, per an Instagram post from the brand.
The new location fills a space previously occupied by Moe's Southwest Grill, which permanently closed on July 31 after five years in the shopping center, according to FFXnow. The site sits in a strip center that has quietly become something of an Asian food destination in Fairfax City, with neighbors like Yanzi Noodle House in Suite 108, which took part in Fairfax City Restaurant Week back in February, per the same outlet.
Parent company Happy Endings Hospitality describes the Fairfax build-out as the next evolution of the Roll Play concept, according to WhatNow. The company's own website says the new spot will offer a bigger space and an elevated dine-in experience compared to earlier locations, though as of now there's no firm opening date beyond the November target floated on social media.
From Poker Tables to Fast-Casual Empire
Roll Play first opened its doors back in 2015, part of a restaurant group with an unusual origin story. Happy Endings Hospitality was co-founded by brothers Di Dang and Hac Dang, both former professional poker players, along with co-owner Tuyet Nhi Le, according to Tysons Premier reporting from 2016. Master chef Tuyet Hoa adapted her family's Vietnamese recipes into the fast-casual, assembly-line format that now defines the brand.
The company's first concept, Louisiana-style seafood eatery Chasin' Tails, launched in Arlington back in April 2012. Since then, Happy Endings Hospitality has expanded across Northern Virginia with a growing roster of brands, including upscale Vietnamese concept Nue, bubble tea shop Teas'n You, Lei'd Island Kitchen, and health bowl restaurant Ăn, per FFXnow's reporting. In January 2022, the company signed leases at Falls Church's Founders Row development to build a 7,500-square-foot venue where Roll Play, Chasin' Tails, and Nue share a single commercial kitchen while keeping separate storefronts and dining rooms, according to a PR Newswire release from that time.
A Brand Built on Wordplay
Beyond the food, Happy Endings Hospitality has leaned hard into playful, risqué branding across its portfolio. Roll Play, Chasin' Tails, Teas'n You, and Lei'd all carry double meanings, and Nue translates to “nude” in French, Nation's Restaurant News reported in May. The company has paired that cheeky marketing with its growing restaurant portfolio.
Roll Play's unit economics have drawn attention in the industry press, with individual storefronts generating roughly $5 million in gross annual revenue, per Nation's Restaurant News. The brand already operates in Tysons, Rosslyn, and Falls Church, and it pushed into Maryland in January 2025 with a delivery-only kitchen on Taft Avenue in Rockville, according to The MoCo Show.
Premium Sourcing Behind the Menu
The Fairfax menu is expected to keep Roll Play's signature lineup of rice bowls, banh mi sandwiches, and pho, built around proteins sourced from The Organic Butcher of McLean. That vendor was named the nation's #1 best butcher by USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice awards, and it supplies Roll Play with pasture-raised Berkshire pork, 100% grass-fed Piedmontese beef, American Wagyu, and NAE halal-certified chicken, according to WhatNow's reporting. The partnership underscores the ingredient quality the chain has built its reputation on as it scales up its dine-in ambitions in Fairfax City.
