Sacramento has once again landed among the ten best foodie cities in the country, coming in at No. 9 nationally in WalletHub's newly released 2026 rankings. The recognition follows a stretch that saw the capital city's restaurant scene pick up multiple Michelin accolades in 2025 and draw glowing national coverage of its best places to eat.
The personal-finance site compared 182 cities across 28 different metrics for its 2026 list, according to WalletHub, which grouped those metrics into two broad categories: affordability, and diversity, accessibility and quality. Each city's final score came from a weighted average across all 28 indicators, the company says. Sacramento's showing means the city held onto its spot in the same rung of the rankings it occupied a year earlier, as the Sacramento Bee reports.
What's notable is how Sacramento got there. WalletHub's own report says Miami ranked first nationally for the availability of affordable restaurants rated at least 4.5 stars — a metric that measures how common it is to find affordable restaurants rated at least 4.5 stars, according to WalletHub. Sacramento, meanwhile, ranked a middling 73rd in overall affordability and 13th out of 182 cities in the broader diversity, accessibility and quality category, per the Bee's account of the rankings. In other words, Sacramento's 73rd-place ranking reflects affordability within WalletHub's foodie-city comparison, which includes food and restaurant costs; but if you're hunting for a great meal that won't break the bank, the city apparently delivers better than almost anywhere else.
What Pushed Sacramento's Score Higher
The affordability side of WalletHub's methodology folded in grocery costs, the accessibility and affordability of high-quality restaurants, and general restaurant meal costs. The diversity, accessibility and quality category, meanwhile, weighed restaurants per capita, the number of Michelin-starred restaurants, farmers markets, community-supported agriculture programs and specialty food stores, according to WalletHub's breakdown of its own metrics.
That framework lines up with what's been happening on the ground in Sacramento. The Bee's report notes that Sacramento restaurants collected several Michelin accolades in 2025, alongside enthusiastic national round-ups naming the city's best places to eat that same year — the kind of momentum that likely helped keep it inside the top 10 rather than sliding out entirely.
Who Beat Sacramento to the Top
Miami claimed the No. 1 spot nationally, a ranking WalletHub attributes partly to its 12 Michelin-starred restaurants, including L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon, which holds two stars. Portland took second place and San Francisco came in third, rounding out WalletHub's podium. Seattle, Austin, Orlando, Tampa and Las Vegas filled out the fourth through eighth spots, with Denver landing at No. 10 just behind Sacramento, according to the Bee's rundown of the full top 10.
WalletHub analyst Adam McCann noted that the rankings considered only each city's official boundaries, excluding surrounding metro-area municipalities — a detail worth keeping in mind for readers comparing Sacramento's showing against sprawling metro regions elsewhere on the list.
A Very Different Ranking Tells a Different Story
Foodie-city rankings, it turns out, depend heavily on who's doing the counting. A separate 2026 ranking from Yelp and Lyft, which combined Yelp's restaurant-search, save, rating and photo-upload data with Lyft rideshare trip data, put New Orleans in the top spot nationally, with Charleston and San Diego rounding out that list's top three, according to Time Out.
The Yelp-Lyft data also surfaced some broader dining trends. Breakfast and brunch was the most-searched restaurant cuisine on Yelp in every city on that list, and nearly one in five Lyft rides to restaurants happened before noon, according to Yelp and Lyft. Two-thirds of the fastest-growing regions for restaurant-bound Lyft rides were concentrated in the South and Southeast, and eight of the 20 metro areas on that list hailed from those same regions.
Reservation-hunting also appears to be surging: Yelp and Lyft's own trend report puts the increase in searches for restaurants with reservations at 145 percent when comparing June 2025 through May 2026 against the prior year. Diners nationally seem increasingly interested in locking down a table in advance — a trend Sacramento's growing restaurant reputation may only accelerate.
