A Sacramento nonprofit born out of one teenager's four-year fight with a rare, aggressive cancer is preparing for its biggest fundraiser yet. Teens Fight Too will host its Rock the Yacht gala at Jesuit High School on October 3, 2026, an evening of live music and an auction meant to fund care packages for teens enduring long hospital stays.
The nonprofit was founded in honor of Talon Bonanno, who battled stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma for four years, according to KCRA 3. The station reported that Patrick Harbison joined its broadcast to share details about the upcoming fundraiser, describing how Talon noticed during his own treatment that many teens lacked age-appropriate comforts and distractions during long hospital stays. He dreamed of changing hospital support for other teenagers and wanted to become a pediatric oncologist so he could help children fighting cancer himself, per the same report.
Talon's case was itself a medical rarity. Neuroblastoma is predominantly diagnosed in infants and toddlers, with roughly 90% of cases found in children under 5 and the median age at diagnosis nationwide around 18 months, according to the American Cancer Society. Fewer than 5% of cases occur in adolescents or adults, making a diagnosis in a 13-year-old like Talon exceedingly uncommon. The National Cancer Institute notes that while five-year survival rates for infants under one with neuroblastoma reached 93% by 2020, older children and adolescents with high-risk forms of the disease continue to face significantly lower long-term survival and greater treatment resistance.
Filling a Gap Hospitals Weren't Built to Address
Talon's observation reflected a broader systemic problem. Teenagers battling severe illness frequently fall into a hospital care gap because facility programming tends to cater either to young children with toys and coloring books or to adults, leaving adolescents without age-appropriate stimulation or support, according to an interview Teens Fight Too founder Christine Bonanno gave on CapRadio's Insight. Teens Fight Too was created specifically to fill that support gap, providing care packages designed to offer comfort, entertainment, and a sense of normalcy during treatment.
Those packages include tangible home comforts: streaming devices like an Amazon Fire TV Stick or Roku, gift cards for DoorDash and local eateries such as Mikuni and In-N-Out, custom teen pillowcases, and gas cards for parents, according to Teens Fight Too. Sponsoring an individual box costs $210. The organization also lists Nintendo Switch consoles, gift cards, and custom pillowcases among donation items.
The nonprofit's mission extends beyond the patients themselves. Teens Fight Too also fosters a community where parents and caregivers feel heard, understood, and supported, and it works to support families of teens undergoing treatment, KCRA 3 reported.
Remembering a Kings Fan and Aspiring Doctor
Talon Bonanno passed away on January 25, 2021, at age 17 after his four-year battle with cancer. He had attended Mariemont Elementary, Arden Middle School, and Jesuit High School in the Sacramento area, according to The Mirada, which reported that community members honored his memory with #talonstrong banners at local parks. KCRA 3 reported that Talon loved the Sacramento Kings, fishing, candy, sushi, and laughing out loud.
Talon Bonanno had a major dream fulfilled when Make-A-Wish and Edwards Collision Studio restored an Eagle Talon automobile for him. He led a motorcade with a Sacramento Sheriff escort to a rally at Jesuit High School in June 2019, an event that came after he had endured 12 rounds of chemotherapy and 20 radiation treatments, according to ABC10.

The 21-and-over gala runs from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Jesuit High School, located at 4660 Fair Oaks Blvd in Sacramento, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. and free parking available, according to event details posted on Eventbrite. KCRA 3 reported the evening will feature live music from The Mad Hatters along with an auction to raise funds for the nonprofit's programs.
