Sacramento is waking up to clear skies and temperatures around 72 degrees Thursday, but the easy start will give way to another punishing afternoon. Highs are expected to reach about 100 degrees, with a Heat Advisory remaining in effect through 10 p.m. Thursday.
Heat Advisory Runs Through Thursday Night
The National Weather Service expects mostly sunny skies, south-southwest winds of 2 to 9 mph and very little chance of rain. The advisory covers Sacramento and surrounding parts of the Sacramento Valley, where hot temperatures may raise the risk of heat illness for people without reliable cooling or enough water.
The latest forecast is a meaningful shift from Wednesday's forecast, which had marked the peak of the heat wave. Thursday will still be hot enough to require caution, especially during the afternoon when temperatures hover near 100 degrees and humidity remains low.
Noticeable Cooldown Arrives Friday
Relief begins Friday, when Sacramento is forecast to reach about 91 degrees under sunny skies. Overnight lows will fall to the lower 60s Thursday night and around 61 degrees Friday night, although south winds could gust as high as 18 mph late Friday.
The weekend looks considerably more manageable, with highs near 83 degrees Saturday and 84 degrees Sunday. The National Weather Service's Sacramento forecast then calls for mostly sunny conditions and highs in the low to upper 80s through Monday, with no meaningful rain expected.
Simple Heat Safety Still Matters
Residents should drink plenty of fluids, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day and use air conditioning or another effective cooling option when possible. Checking on older neighbors, young children and anyone with health conditions is especially important while the advisory remains active.
