A 21-year-old man was shot just north of downtown San Antonio in the early morning hours, left with a stinging sensation in his lower extremities before he realized he'd actually been struck by gunfire. The suspect remains at large, and investigators say they still don't know what triggered the shooting.
Officers were called to the 1300 block of McCullough Avenue just before 2 a.m., according to WOAI. That address is Methodist Hospital Metropolitan. The station reports the man had been near Brooklyn and Broadway when he felt a sting in his lower extremities, saw a dark-colored vehicle speed away, and only then realized he'd been shot.
He was taken to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, the outlet's report notes. Police have made no arrests, and the investigation into what led up to the shooting remains ongoing, per the same account.
A Familiar Pattern Near McCullough Avenue
This isn't the first time a shooting victim has turned up at the same McCullough Avenue address rather than at the actual crime scene. In June 2025, San Antonio police responded to the 1300 block of McCullough at 1:45 a.m. after a 19-year-old woman and a 16-year-old boy were dropped off with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds following a highway drive-by shooting, according to KSAT. And in May 2023, a 32-year-old passenger who'd been shot twice in the head during a vehicle shooting was driven directly to Methodist Hospital in that same block just before midnight, as reported by the San Antonio Express-News. In that 2023 case, police were initially unable to pin down the precise shooting location; the victim had been driven to the emergency room.
The intersection of Brooklyn Avenue and Broadway, where the victim in this latest shooting reported feeling gunfire, sits in San Antonio's River North district, according to the San Antonio Report. The outlet also notes that Brooklyn Avenue and Broadway were part of a Síclovía route.
What Charges Could Follow an Arrest
Whoever fired the shots that struck the 21-year-old could eventually face serious felony exposure once identified. Texas Penal Code § 22.02 classifies firing a weapon at a person and causing bodily injury as Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, a second-degree felony punishable by 2 to 20 years in state prison and fines up to $10,000. Prosecutors could also pursue Deadly Conduct under Texas Penal Code § 22.05, a third-degree felony carrying 2 to 10 years in prison for knowingly discharging a firearm toward a person, vehicle, or occupied structure, per FindLaw.
Despite those citywide gains, drive-by shootings with unclear motives remain a persistent challenge for detectives, and this case is no exception. Police have said they are not sure what led up to the shooting, and no arrests have been made as the investigation continues.
