A suspicious-death call near the San Marcos River escalated into a homicide investigation Sunday evening, after police found a person dead in the 600 block of C.M. Allen Parkway and detained a person of interest. Authorities had not released further identifying information, and officials asked the public to steer clear of the corridor while the investigation continued.
San Marcos Public Safety Communications Specialist Russell Wilde confirmed that officers responded to the area at roughly 5:40 p.m. Sunday for a report of a suspicious death, according to The University Star. Detectives classified the death as a homicide based on physical evidence gathered at the scene. A person of interest was detained, and authorities had not released identifying information about the victim or detained individual.
As reported by CBS Austin, a large police presence remained in the area Sunday night, and officials asked the public to avoid the parkway while the investigation continued. The outlet noted that no additional details about the circumstances surrounding the death were available, and said the case would be updated as more information becomes known.

The discovery also comes just eight days after San Marcos police opened a separate death investigation on September 12, when a man was found deceased in a roadway near San Antonio and Endicott streets. The University Star reported that an autopsy in that case showed no evidence of blunt force trauma or immediate foul play, with toxicology results still pending.

San Marcos Police Department Crime Analysis Unit data released in late 2025 found that violent crime at The Square in downtown San Marcos surged nearly 39% between 2022 and 2024, even as citywide violent crime fell 46% over the same period, per the same University Star report. Police at the time attributed some of the perception of rising danger to high-profile incidents clustered around central public gathering places.
Sunday's case is not the only recent violent death tied to the San Marcos area. In August, San Marcos officers were first on scene to a fatal shooting in the 5000 block of Crossover Road, assisting Guadalupe County deputies in detaining a 21-year-old suspect charged with murder and deadly conduct after stray rounds struck neighboring homes, according to KSAT. In July 2025, a dispute outside a downtown bar near San Antonio and Guadalupe streets left two young men dead after an argument turned into a robbery attempt, resulting in two capital murder charges against a 19-year-old suspect, as reported by FOX 7 Austin.

Hays County was the first county in Texas to integrate all of its municipal police departments into a single shared data platform.
