A 2012 Santa Cruz High School graduate who landed a breakout role in Netflix's “The Gringo Hunters” as noted by the Santa Cruz Sentinel is relearning how to walk, speak and even eat after a driver traveling more than 100 mph slammed into his car on a Los Angeles freeway in April. Clayton Conroy was given a low survival rate following the crash, and five months later he is still dealing with headaches, brain fog and cognitive fatigue as he works to rebuild his life, according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
Conroy was driving home after meeting friends at a Los Angeles bar on April 19 when another vehicle struck him as he exited Interstate 10, according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel. The California Highway Patrol was called to the crash on the eastbound lanes of the 10 Freeway near La Brea Avenue, as reported by KTLA. Conroy suffered a traumatic brain injury and fractures to his hip and shoulder, per the Sentinel's account of his recovery.
A Low Survival Rate and Emergency Brain Surgery
Conroy was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he underwent brain surgery after being given a low survival rate, according to the New York Post. The Post reported that Conroy also suffered severed nerves in his arm and fractured bones in his leg, and that he lost 20 pounds in the aftermath. He spent one month at Cedars-Sinai before continuing cognitive, physical and occupational therapy outside the hospital, the outlet reported.
Conroy told the Post he remembered entering the exit lane and checking his rearview mirror before noticing lights approaching quickly — and then the impact. He said he was hit by a driver going over 100 mph and had brain surgery, and said that even now he still could not walk without limitation. The Sentinel's report notes he spent months relearning basic functions including reading, showering, drinking, chewing and eating.
From Rollator to Cane to Walking Again
Conroy's physical recovery unfolded in stages. He initially relied on a rollator to walk, then progressed to using a cane, and eventually began walking short distances without assistance, the Sentinel reported. “I'm able to walk longer distances, but I'm not capable of athletics,” Conroy said, according to the outlet. He has continued to deal with headaches, brain fog and cognitive fatigue throughout the process.
During part of his recovery, Conroy stayed with his parents in Sacramento before returning to Los Angeles, per the Sentinel. Britt Crennell, cited by the Post, called Conroy a walking miracle and said his recovery could take as long as five years.
A Breakout Role Interrupted
Conroy had been acting for more than a decade before landing a recurring role in “The Gringo Hunters,” in which he played Padre Terry, an American Catholic priest, according to the Post. The Netflix series cracked the platform's top 10 non-English series when it premiered in July 2025, Santa Cruz Sentinel reported in its report. Its success led to Conroy landing a new agent, several voice acting gigs and other projects lined up, the outlet noted.
Conroy said he hopes to eventually return to acting once his recovery allows it. In comments reported by the Post, he wrote that friends and family will help him through anything, and that justice must be fought for.
Reckless Driving Charge Filed
California Highway Patrol officers arrested Noor El Deen Amr Soror, a 19-year-old Anaheim resident, on Aug. 26 in connection with the crash, according to the Post. As reported by the Santa Cruz Sentinel, Soror was charged with felony reckless driving causing major injuries. KTLA, which covered the arrest at the time, reported that no further details, including the victim's identity, were released by authorities in its initial account of the case.
