Pennsylvania Avenue NW between 3rd and 6th Streets turns into a stretch of Bangkok this Saturday, September 19, as the Sawasdee DC Thai Festival sets up shop from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The event marks 193 years of diplomatic relations between Thailand and the United States, and this year it's moved off the National Mall and directly into the heart of downtown D.C.
The Royal Thai Embassy hosted an exclusive preview of the festival ahead of the big day, according to WJLA, whose Good Morning Washington team sat down with His Excellency Dr. Suriya Chindawongse, Thailand's ambassador to the United States. Suriya took over the post in June 2024 after serving as Thailand's Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2021 to 2024 and as ambassador to Singapore before that, according to the Royal Thai Embassy.
The station's preview notes the festival will lean heavily on food, with Thai street food vendors serving up regional curries, pad Thai, and mango sticky rice throughout the day. Attendees can also expect authentic Thai wellness experiences, including traditional Thai massages, alongside traditional dance and contemporary cultural demonstrations meant to represent Thai communities from across the country.
From the National Mall to Downtown's Main Corridor
This is a notable shift in geography. Last year's Sawasdee DC festival unfolded on September 14, 2025, on the National Mall, drawing roughly 100,000 visitors under the theme “Innovation, Creativity and Cultural Fusion,” with Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt and D.C. Secretary of State Kimberly Bassett among those in attendance, per the Royal Thai Embassy. This year's third annual edition carries the theme “Harmonious Vibes, Creative Heartbeats, Thailand & America @250,” tying the celebration to the country's upcoming Semiquincentennial, according to The National Law Review.
That outlet's preview also lists celebrity emcees Pancake Khemanit and Willie McIntosh hosting the day, with musical performances from JR Bubblegum, Non Thiya, and girl group MY EYES rounding out the lineup. Thai singer and musical theater actor Gun Napat is scheduled to perform as part of his broader 2026 U.S. tour, which also includes stops in Seattle, Sacramento, and Chicago, according to the festival's own event listing.

Why It's Landing on Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington and Bangkok have municipal history behind this move downtown. The two cities established a formal Sister City partnership in 1962, making Bangkok the first sister city D.C. ever signed on with, according to the D.C. Office of the Secretary. The countries also have a longstanding relationship; Thailand is described as the United States' oldest partner in Asia, per the U.S. Navy 7th Fleet.
That same alliance is part of the broader context this month.
Getting There: Detours and a Crowded Weekend
Anyone driving downtown Saturday should plan ahead. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority has detoured Metrobus routes D10 and D1X and closed stretches of Pennsylvania Avenue NW and Constitution Avenue NW between 4th and 7th Streets, with vehicle closures beginning at 11 p.m. Friday and emergency no-parking restrictions beginning at 10 p.m., according to WMATA.
Sawasdee DC also takes place Saturday.
