A pedestrian riding a non-electric scooter is fighting for life after crashing into a car on West Spring Mountain Road in the Spring Valley area Monday evening, according to Las Vegas police. Officers say the driver had a green light and showed no signs of impairment, while the scooter rider is believed to have darted into the vehicle's path.
The crash happened around 5:09 p.m. Monday at the intersection of West Spring Mountain Road and South Cimarron Road, according to a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department statement reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. A 2021 blue Chevrolet Camaro was traveling westbound on Spring Mountain through a solid green signal when it struck the pedestrian, who was crossing southbound on the scooter. Police say the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, according to KSNV.
The injured pedestrian sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to University Medical Center of Southern Nevada. The crash investigation remains ongoing, per the station's report.
Intersection Shut Down During Evening Commute
Responding officers closed the intersection of West Spring Mountain Road and South Cimarron Road in all directions Monday evening while traffic collision investigators processed the scene, according to a Facebook post from News 3 Las Vegas. The shutdown came during the evening commute.
Nevada traffic law offers a framework for how investigators may ultimately assess fault. Under Nevada Revised Statutes Section 484B.287, pedestrians crossing outside a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection are required to yield the right-of-way to vehicles, according to Justia Law. A separate statute, NRS 484B.283, states that while motorists must yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, pedestrians are barred from suddenly leaving a curb or place of safety and walking or riding into the path of a vehicle too close to yield safely, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.
Spring Mountain Corridor Under Construction for Safety Upgrades
The crash lands on a stretch of Spring Mountain Road that has drawn increasing attention from Clark County planners. The county approved $12.5 million in public funding for a major rebuild of the corridor between Rainbow Boulevard and Decatur Boulevard beginning this summer, according to Clark County Community and Economic Development.
Monday's crash is not the first serious pedestrian incident along this stretch of Spring Mountain Road. Hoodline previously reported on a Chinatown pedestrian crash in April that also left a victim with life-threatening injuries. Nearby Cimarron Road has also seen major collisions, including a three-vehicle crash near West Charleston Boulevard in March that resulted in multiple hospitalizations and DUI charges.
The investigation remains ongoing.
