Selena Gomez has closed the book on her Encino chapter, selling the 11,500-square-foot estate where she filmed her HBO Max cooking series for $5.4 million this week. The mansion, custom-built decades ago for rock legend Tom Petty, had sat on the market since spring before finding a buyer at a price roughly $1 million below its original ask.

According to TMZ, Gomez sold the Encino estate on Tuesday for $5.4 million, and the property carries six bedrooms and ten bathrooms across its sprawling footprint. The listing was held by Branden Williams of The Beverly Hills Estates, per TMZ's reporting. Gomez had originally listed the home in May for $6.49 million, according to Elite Agent, before trimming the price by about $1 million to close the deal roughly four months later.

The estate's amenities reflect its scale: a wine cellar, a formal dining room, a spacious living room, a media room, a glam room, and even a massage room, per TMZ. But its most famous feature is the kitchen, with its white-painted exposed brick surrounding a Viking range, which served as the primary filming backdrop for the first three seasons of Gomez's Selena + Chef, according to Elite Agent's reporting.

A Home Built From the Ashes of Tragedy

The property's history stretches back to 1989, when it was custom-built for Tom Petty and his first wife, Jane Benyo, after an arsonist destroyed their previous home on the same lot in 1987, Elite Agent reports. Petty lived on the property through the mid-1980s until his divorce, after which the house was eventually foreclosed upon in 2015, according to the outlet.

Developers then purchased the foreclosed residence from a bank in 2017 for $2.6 million and executed a comprehensive multi-million dollar overhaul, per Nestfreak. Gomez then bought the renovated estate in March 2020 for $4.89 million, holding it through a private trust for six years as her primary residence before listing it this year, the same Elite Agent report notes.

Consolidating Into a $35 Million Beverly Hills Compound

The sale follows Gomez and record producer Benny Blanco acquiring a $35 million Beverly Hills estate in December 2024, shortly before announcing their engagement and subsequent 2025 marriage, according to Realtor.com. That marital compound spans two lots and includes a seven-bedroom main house, two guesthouses, a home theater, a fitness center, and a professional music studio, the outlet reports, dwarfing the scale of the Encino property Gomez has now let go.

The Encino sale also comes with a hidden cost tied to Los Angeles housing policy. Under the city's Measure ULA transfer tax rules, sales priced above $5.4 million and below $10.9 million incur a 4.0% transfer tax on the gross sale price, according to the Los Angeles Office of Finance. Because the sale closed at exactly $5.4 million, it would not incur the tax, resulting in $0 owed on this transaction. Proceeds from the so-called mansion tax fund local affordable housing and tenant protection initiatives, per the agency.

Gomez's real estate history includes other moves in and out of Southern California luxury properties. She purchased a Calabasas mansion in 2014 for $3.69 million before selling it at a loss in 2016 for $3.3 million to rapper French Montana, according to GlamHomeGuide, which notes she has also bought and sold properties in Studio City and Fort Worth. Her broader financial standing dwarfs any single home sale — Bloomberg reported in September 2024 that Gomez had reached billionaire status with an estimated net worth of $1.3 billion, driven largely by her majority stake in cosmetics company Rare Beauty, according to Business Insider.
