A semi-truck and a Toyota sedan collided along Interstate 75 southbound near mile marker 158 in the Tucker's Grade area near Punta Gorda at around 5:45 a.m. Saturday, setting off a complex rescue that required extrication tools, hazmat containment and a helicopter landing directly on the highway. The Toyota's driver was trapped inside the wreckage and needed to be cut free before being flown to a trauma center.
Charlotte County Fire & EMS confirmed the crash location and timing, according to the department's Charlotte County Public Safety office. Five different units responded to the scene, and as reported by WFLA, a FedEx truck was possibly involved as the other vehicle in the crash, based on a photo from the scene.
Thirty Minutes to Free a Trapped Driver
Crews from Engine 7, Squad 12 and Rescue 32 spent roughly 30 minutes safely removing the trapped patient from the Toyota, per the station's report. The sedan was damaged so severely that its driver required extrication, and the patient received continuous medical treatment throughout the process, from the moment they were pulled from the car to the rescue vehicle and ultimately to the helicopter.
Squad 12 is a special-operations truck, while Charlotte County Fire & EMS has capabilities for technical rescue and hazardous-material response, according to Charlotte County Fire & EMS. The unit was involved in the effort to free the driver from the damaged sedan.
Helicopter Lands on the Interstate for Trauma Alert
A medical helicopter landed directly on the highway while crews were still working to free the trapped driver, and the patient was flown out as a trauma alert. Officials have not shared the person's condition, nor have they released the cause or circumstances leading to the impact, the outlet's report notes.

A separate engine on scene mitigated between 20 and 40 gallons of oil that leaked after the collision, preventing further contamination of the roadway. Charlotte County Public Safety praised the coordination, communication and teamwork of the responders involved in the rescue.

Under Florida Statute § 316.066, investigating officers must complete and submit a comprehensive Florida Traffic Crash Report within 10 days of finishing their investigation for any crash involving personal injury or a commercial motor vehicle, per Online Sunshine. The statute sets a reporting requirement, though no cause has yet been made public in this case.
Commercial motor vehicles are involved in more than 44,000 crashes across Florida each year, accounting for approximately 8.4% of the state's traffic fatalities, according to data cited by HOV Law. Commercial fleets are also subject to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rules.
