A tractor-trailer slammed into a stopped Pasco County school bus and a Hyundai Tucson on US-301 near Desrosier Road Tuesday morning, sending three people, including a 13-year-old student, to local hospitals with minor injuries. The crash happened around 9:57 a.m. as the bus sat in the southbound outside lane with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended while loading children at a designated stop.
According to Tampa Free Press, the Hyundai Tucson had been traveling southbound in the inside lane and had also stopped next to the bus when the southbound tractor-trailer failed to notice the stopped traffic ahead. Florida Highway Patrol reported that the truck driver, a 42-year-old St. Petersburg man, swerved left in an attempt to avoid hitting the bus directly, but the trailer instead struck the right rear of the Tucson before clipping the left rear of the bus.
Three people were transported to local medical facilities with minor injuries, the outlet reported. A 22-year-old female passenger on the bus, who was from Dade City, was taken for treatment, while the 13-year-old male student riding the bus was also transported for care. A 26-year-old female passenger in the Tucson, who was from Zephyrhills, was treated, but the vehicle's 29-year-old male driver was not taken for medical treatment despite suffering minor injuries. The 43-year-old bus driver, a Wesley Chapel resident, and the truck driver both reported no injuries.
A Dangerous Stretch of Road With a Troubled Past
The stretch of US-301 near Desrosier Road has seen serious trouble before. In April 2022, a location on US-301 south of Desrosier Road was the site of a fatal hit-and-run pedestrian crash that turned chaotic when a pickup truck driver plowed through the active Florida Highway Patrol crime scene, triggering a multi-county chase, according to Lutz Patch.
The corridor is a four-lane divided arterial, and the Florida Department of Transportation is studying widening specified sections of US-301 to six lanes, per the Florida Department of Transportation. US-301 also functions as a major regional truck and evacuation route linking Tampa Bay to central Florida.
Stop-Arm Laws Carry Steep Penalties
Florida law leaves little room for confusion about a driver's obligations around a stopped school bus. Under Florida Statute Section 316.172, drivers approaching from either direction on an undivided road must come to a complete stop when a bus displays flashing red lights and an extended stop arm, remaining stopped until the signal is withdrawn, according to the Florida Senate. Failing to stop carries a minimum $200 civil penalty and four driver's license points, while illegally passing on the side where children board can trigger a $400 civil penalty, a mandatory hearing and a driver-improvement course.
The same 2023 update to state law authorized Florida school districts to mount automated infraction detection cameras on buses to catch stop-arm violators, with civil penalties distributed to school districts and the Department of Health. Crashes involving school buses are not rare occurrences in Florida: safety campaign data released by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office indicates the state sees roughly 2,700 school bus-related traffic collisions every year.
Pasco Schools' Bus Fleet Under Strain
Tuesday's crash lands against the backdrop of a school transportation system already stretched thin. Pasco County Schools eliminated unfunded courtesy busing for middle and high schoolers living within two miles of campus ahead of the 2022-2023 school year amid a shortage that left 49 of its 297 routes without permanent coverage, per WTSP.
To keep routes staffed and on time, Pasco County Schools offered quarterly bonuses totaling up to $750 for drivers, according to NewsRadio WFLA. The district has used bonuses in an effort to keep routes staffed and on time.
The district has also been investing in pedestrian infrastructure.
Part of a Broader Pattern of Bus Safety Incidents
Tuesday's collision is the latest in a string of school bus safety incidents to hit Florida in recent months. Last September, a juvenile in Zephyrhills was charged with criminal mischief and battery after firing a BB gun at an active Pasco County school bus, causing a minor injury to a passenger. The incidents underscore the broader safety risks around school buses.
