A 21-year-old Severn man is fighting for his life after his Audi sedan slammed into guardrails and a light pole late Tuesday night, then caught fire, on the ramp where Route 100 merges onto Route 10 in Glen Burnie. Bystanders reached the burning car before emergency crews arrived and pulled the driver out, according to witnesses at the scene. He was rushed to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Anne Arundel County police and fire personnel from the Eastern District were dispatched to the single-vehicle crash at roughly 10:35 p.m. Tuesday, according to Anne Arundel County Government. The department's official incident report, logged as case 26-728815, places the crash at the Route 100 and Route 10 interchange in Glen Burnie. Investigators say the driver, operating a 2018 Audi sedan northbound on Route 100, failed to negotiate the curve where the highway merges onto Route 10, according to a preliminary investigation reported by The BayNet.
Car Struck Guardrails on Both Sides Before Catching Fire
The Audi struck a guardrail on the driver's side, crashed through it, and continued across the roadway before going through a second guardrail on the opposite side, per the same account. The vehicle also struck a light pole during the sequence and caught fire following the impact. Anne Arundel County Fire Department personnel transported the 21-year-old to an area hospital, where he was listed as suffering life-threatening injuries.
Before fire crews arrived, witnesses at the scene pulled the driver from the burning vehicle, the outlet's report notes. Maryland law offers civil protection for exactly this kind of intervention: under Maryland Code, Courts and Judicial Proceedings Section 5-603, bystanders who voluntarily render emergency aid or pull crash victims from burning cars without compensation are shielded from personal injury lawsuits, as long as their actions don't amount to gross negligence, according to Southern Maryland Law.
Crash Reconstruction Team Called to the Scene
The Anne Arundel County Police Crash Reconstruction Team is now investigating the wreck. The specialized unit is investigating the crash, according to the county release and The BayNet. Whether speed, alcohol, or a mechanical failure contributed to the driver losing control has not been determined, and it remains unclear whether citations or charges will follow once the reconstruction is complete.
This isn't the first serious wreck at this interchange. In July 2021, a fatal single-vehicle crash occurred at the same MD Route 100 and Route 10 interchange when a 2017 BMW X5 traveling westbound on Route 100 approaching the Route 10 interchange left the roadway and entered a roadside culvert, killing all three occupants, according to Anne Arundel County Government records. Route 100 itself is a state highway in Anne Arundel County, per the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration.

The driver's current condition has not been publicly updated since he was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
