After a string of pushed-back target dates, Shake Shack is set to open the doors of its new downtown Bethesda restaurant at 10 a.m. on Sept. 30, bringing the fast-casual burger chain's fourth Montgomery County location to the ground floor of the Element 28 apartment tower at 7535 Old Georgetown Road. The first wave of customers that morning will walk away with custom Shake Shack tote bags, and for every sandwich sold that day, the company will donate $1 to KID Museum, the Bethesda-based nonprofit known for hands-on STEM programming for local kids.
The opening day charity tie-in was detailed by Bethesda MD Patch, which reported that KID Museum operates interactive maker-learning programs serving Montgomery County students. The 3,500-square-foot restaurant sits one block from the Bethesda Metro Station, per Bethesda Magazine, and lands in a retail row that already includes Sweeteria, PopUp Bagels and Chipotle.
A Launch Date That Kept Slipping
Getting to opening day took longer than expected. The MoCo Show tracked the project's opening target as it moved from an initial projection of June 24, 2026, to August, then to Sept. 17, before finally settling on Sept. 30. The company had announced plans for the eatery more than a year before its opening, according to Bethesda Magazine.
The restaurant is set in the former bank branch space. Montgomery County Alcohol Beverage Services also had to weigh in, granting the restaurant approval to serve beer and wine on-site following a hearing in May 2026, per the same account.
Fourth County Location, Second in Bethesda
The downtown storefront marks Shake Shack's second location in Bethesda and its fourth in Montgomery County, joining its existing locations at Cabin John Village in Potomac, Westfield Montgomery Mall and Kentlands Square in Gaithersburg, according to The MoCo Show. Bethesda Magazine notes it will also be the chain's 11th Maryland location overall.
The new restaurant will occupy space once home to a SunTrust Bank branch, according to Multi-Housing News.
Part of a Broader Retail Wave
The Bethesda opening also fits into a larger pattern of retail activity along Old Georgetown Road this year. ONE Residential connected the timing to a summer 2026 wave of new dining arrivals in the corridor, including the debut of Connecticut-based PopUp Bagels at the nearby Solaire complex.
Once open, the Bethesda Shake Shack will run from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, per Bethesda Magazine. The menu includes the chain's signature quarter-pound Angus beef burgers alongside vegetarian and vegan options such as the Veggie Shack, made with patties of mushrooms, sweet potatoes, carrots, farro and quinoa, and the Shroom Burger, a fried portobello mushroom stuffed with melted muenster cheese. Diners can also find hot dogs, loaded fries, mac and cheese, chicken nuggets and shakes in flavors from chocolate and coffee to limited-time offerings like Reese's Peanut Butter Cup and Tropical Mango with passionfruit popping boba.
