The chain has swapped its old open-enrollment format for a lineup built entirely from regulars nominated at each of its 15 restaurants, with the contest set for 5 pm at 721 Norwood Rd. in Silver Spring during the Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Festival.
The shift is a deliberate pivot away from the kind of public or professional eating contests that once drew strangers off the street. As reported by The MoCo Show, Big Greek Cafe selected one loyal customer from each of its 15 locations spanning both states, turning the event into something closer to a customer-appreciation showcase than a competitive-eating spectacle. The winner walks away with a $500 cash prize, a free gyro every week for a year, recognition at their home location, and the official championship belt.

Big Greek Cafe traces back to a single family-owned restaurant that opened in downtown Silver Spring in 2009, founded by twin brothers Simos and Nikos Marmaras. According to Patch, the brothers opened the restaurant to honor their late mother, Koralia, who had dreamed of running a budget-friendly Greek eatery before she died in 2006. That original shop has since grown into a 15-restaurant regional chain stretching across Bethesda, Eldersburg, Frederick, Laurel, Rockville, Urbana and Sterling, among other communities.
The chain's affordability-first mission still shows up in its weekly $7 Gyro Wednesday promotion, a tradition Hoodline has covered in Frederick's newest location. The chain's gyro has also picked up outside recognition, with the Big Greek Cafe gyro named the best in D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia by The Washington Post. Saturday's competition is just one piece of the Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Festival, which runs September 11 through 13 at the church's Norwood Road grounds. The parish hosting it all has deep roots in the region.
