Austin's Sonic Guild Ball is getting a makeover this year. The nonprofit's annual celebration of independent music takes place at ACL Live at the Moody Theater on December 11, and for the first time in its history, the event has a theme: The Golden Girls.
According to sonicguild.org, the 13th annual ball is officially “Inspired by the Golden Girls,” marking a new twist for an event that has spent more than a decade spotlighting local musicians. The event is scheduled for December 11.
Sonic Guild describes itself as a member-powered music community that supports independent artists through direct grants, intimate live shows, and deeper connections between artists and audiences, the organization's site notes. That mission dates back to the group's founding in 2013 under a different name — Black Fret — according to the Austin Chronicle.
New Leadership Steering the Ball
Bobby Garza took over as Sonic Guild's executive director in May, the Chronicle reported, stepping into a role overseeing an organization that has directly supported more than 300 bands and well over 1,000 musicians since 2013, according to v13.net. That same report puts Sonic Guild's total investment in local music at more than $7.3 million since its inception, funneled through grants, performance opportunities, and support meant to help artists build lasting, self-sustaining careers.
Garza brings his own résumé to the job. Per v13.net, he was pivotal in producing iconic Austin events like Fun Fun Fun Fest and Levitation Austin. The outlet also reported that Sonic Guild was planning to announce another round of Tour Support Grants alongside the launch of a new George Reiff Producers Grant program.
Sonic Guild's footprint extends beyond Austin, though the exact shape of that expansion depends on which source is consulted. The Austin Chronicle reported the organization has expanded over the years with chapters in Seattle, Colorado, and the Ozarks, while v13.net described it as founded in Austin with chapters in Seattle and Denver.
A Ball Built for the Public
The Sonic Guild Ball was opened to the public for the first time last year, according to the Austin Chronicle's account of the organization's recent history — a shift that turned what had been a members-only affair into a citywide celebration anyone could attend. This year's event is scheduled for ACL Live.
The event still carries deep roots in Sonic Guild's broader work of supporting independent artists through direct grants and intimate live shows, connecting musicians with audiences in ways the organization says are central to its mission. For a nonprofit built on turning member support into real dollars for working bands, a splashy theme like The Golden Girls marks a notable evolution from its earlier, more insider-only gatherings.

Whether this year's Golden Girls theme carries through to costuming, decor, or programming beyond the name itself remains to be seen, but the shift marks the first time organizers have attached any specific theme to the annual gathering. With the December date approaching, Austin's independent music community has a new reason to mark its calendar.
