A shooting before 5 a.m. today sent one person to the hospital with life-threatening injuries near a South Charlotte senior living campus, according to medics on scene. The gunfire was reported in the 5800 block of Old Providence Road near Providence Road, a stretch of the city better known for retirement housing than violent crime.
The victim was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, per medics cited by Queen City News. Authorities had not disclosed what led to the shooting as of Friday morning, and the outlet reported that the shooting did not occur on the retirement community property itself. The address is listed as home to a retirement community, though the exact circumstances of where along the block the gunfire happened remain unclear.
That address, the 5800 block of Old Providence Road, is the site of Brookdale Carriage Club Providence, a 45-acre continuing care retirement community offering independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing care, according to the NC Department of Insurance. The campus includes ten apartment buildings and seven four-plex villas built to house senior residents, a detail that makes Friday's shooting notably unusual for the corridor.
A Corridor With a Troubled Recent Past
This isn't the first time gunfire has struck this stretch of Old Providence Road. In May 2023, 43-year-old resident Gerald McQueary was killed near the nearby Gladedale Apartments complex, and gunfire was fired into his family's apartment two days later, according to the Atlas One App. CMPD homicide detectives investigated that shooting as an unsolved case, the app noted.
The corridor is also on the cusp of major change. The nearby intersection of Old Providence Road, Providence Road, and Sardis Lane is slated to become a $500 million, 55-acre mixed-use development, bringing nearly 1,000 apartment units along with office space and retail when it breaks ground in 2026, per Construction Review. The project is a joint venture involving Levine Properties, Horizon Development Properties, and Northwood Ravin.
Part of a Recent Cluster of South Charlotte Gunfire
Friday's shooting comes just days after another violent incident in South Charlotte, when a man was shot and killed on September 8 in the 6200 block of Park Road near Archdale Drive, close to Park Road Park and SouthPark Mall, as Hoodline previously reported. That shooting, along with an overnight shooting on Montford Drive near Park Road weeks earlier, has kept public safety concerns elevated in neighborhoods typically known for being quiet.
Law enforcement response for this stretch of South Charlotte falls to CMPD's South Division, which operates out of a 22,435-square-foot LEED Silver-certified station built to serve southern Mecklenburg County, according to the City of Charlotte. The facility houses patrol officers, administrative staff, and neighborhood coordination teams tasked with responding to incidents across the area.
Citywide Numbers Show Progress, But Shootings Persist
The Friday shooting arrives even as CMPD's midyear 2026 public safety update, released in July, showed violent crime across Charlotte down 8% and overall crime down 16% in the first half of the year compared to 2025. Homicides, however, held roughly steady at 40 cases versus 39 the year before, while property crime fell 17% and motor vehicle thefts dropped 31% over the same period.
Those gains build on a sharp decline the year before. Citywide violent crime dropped 21% overall during 2025 compared to 2024, with total homicides falling from 110 to 96 and aggravated assaults dropping from 5,695 to 4,533 — one of the largest single-year reductions in recent city history. Even so, recent cases show the courts still working through a backlog of severe shootings from prior years: Mecklenburg County Superior Court resolved one such case in early September, when a 29-year-old defendant pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a 12-to-15-year prison sentence for an August 2025 killing on South Boulevard that followed an altercation outside a local bar.
Under North Carolina General Statutes § 14-32, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury is a Class E felony, while assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury escalates to a Class C felony carrying active state prison sentences of up to 231 months.
